This new venture failed within a year but In 1870 another group led by Hiram Gore started an unsuccessful seed corn business near downtown before starting their own grocery store several years later! 2 more stores followed soon thereafter with additional land being donated through private sale or purchase - these stores remain open today as staples like Bank & Grocery (now Macy’s) and Sprague’s (now JCPenney).
