The name Boone originated from the Cherokee word bōnē (hollow place). The first European to visit what is now Boone was Captain James Cook on his second voyage around the world in 1768-1769. He named it after Major General David Boone who had fought in the American Revolution and served as an aide to Cornwallis. The area that now includes Boone was part of Tryon County until 1835 when it becameCarteret County. The first white settler in what would become Boone was Caleb Winn who arrived in 1799 and built a cabin on a hill overlooking today's town. In 1828, Colonel John Coker founded the Fayetteville Academy which still operates today as one of NC's largest higher education institutions. In 1829, George Washington Parke bought 176 acres (70 hams) of land east of downtown for $5 per acre and named it "Parrk Place". In 1830 he donated this property to UNC for use as a campus for their newly founded school of engineering studies. In 1834, Reverend Elijah Hicks purchased 640 acres (240 hams) northeast of downtown from Coker for $10 per acre and called it "Hicks Place". Reverend Hicks donated this land to UNC for use as an agricultural research center which operated until 1962 when it merged with NC State University becoming known as NC State University/NC State Polytechnic Institute (). From its beginning, Boone has been home to many prominent people including Governor Tryon Daniel Webster; Governors Gaston Woodfin and Philander Knox; Senators John Lynch and Jesse Hunt; Congressman Joel Gooding; actors Cary Grant and others including composer Irving Berlin are all natives or residents either directly or indirectly descended from such people or families who have lived here since early childhoods.Rooney says: In 1899-1900 two brothers by the name of Joe Built Boones Store on Main Street which continues to be open today as one of Carteret County’s most important businesses.
