The Coast Guard has been a part of North Carolina for over 200 years. The Coast Guard was formed in 1795 as the U.S. Customs and Excise Service. In 1916, the Coast Guard became an independent service with its own army unit, the United States Coast Guard Reserve. The Coast Guard was again made an independent service in 1971 when it became the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS). In 2002, both NMFS and the Coast Guard merged to form NOAA. Today, the Coast Guard is one of America’s most important law enforcement agencies and play a vital role inKeep our coast safe by patrolling ocean areas including those near US coasts and borders; rescuing sailors and fishermen who are in trouble; providing support to state police departments during crime scenes; responding to disasters such as hurricanes or earthquakes; performing search and rescue missions when someone goes missing overboard; working together with other federal agencies on a variety of security issues such as counterterrorism, border protection, environmental monitoring, fisheries management, public health emergencies etc. In Boone County there have been many different gifts given to members of the coast guard over time from various individuals or businesses wishing to show their appreciation for this important organization.
