Boone is a town in Cherokee County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,853 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greensboro-Winston-Salem metropolitan area and is located on the eastern border of Raleigh. The name Boone comes from an Englishman who settled in this area in 1786, John Boone. The land now known as Booneville was taken by the McIntosh family in 1790 and held by them until 1814 when it was sold to the Catawba Tribe. In 1818, President James K. Polk established a post office in what is now Booneville and named it after General Andrew Jackson who had been president during that time. The first store opened in what is now Booneville on December 12th, 1830 by Heman Stephenson with supplies brought overland from Hillsborough County. A post office called Beech Grove was established here on October 15th, 1840 by Jno Sutherlin with supplies brought overland from Randolph County and became operational on November 2nd. By 1870, there were nine stores operated within three miles of each other here including four owned and operated by men only- one store still stands today! The timber industry played a major role early on with many sawmills operating near present day downtown Booneville as well as two grist mills which produced flour for local markets until 1898 when all mills were closed due to competition from more efficient machines! 2 large locomotives hauling logs were built for the Southern Railway company between 1951 and 1953 at Roanoke Rapids Plant #5 (now Roanoke Rapids Power Station) adjoining US 421 just east of town limits; they are still operational! This community prospered greatly under railroad patronage - thanks Northern Virginia & North Carolina Railroad!
