The United States Navy has a long and proud history in Asheville, North Carolina. The navy was founded on December 4, 1775, when the U.S. Congress passed an act to establish a navy to protect American coastline and maritime interests. The first ships of the United States Navy were built at Portsmouth, New Hampshire in 1798. The navy’s presence in Asheville began with the founding of the Naval Volunteer Reserve here in 1916. Thisunit was later renamed the Naval Reserve Active Component Force (NRAFC). In 1977, naval aviation operations began here when NAS Albemarle became Naval Air Station Asheville (NAAS Asheville). Today, NAS Asheville is one of only two military installations located within 100 miles of Raleigh-Durham metropolitan area – providing access to world-class Aviation Training Centers and other advanced capabilities for our sailors and marines. This decline has been partially reversed since 2000) although there still remains some residual growth potential within Asheville neighborhoods specifically targeting leisure/entertainment industry businesses such as nightlife venues or restaurants catering to young professionals or students looking for affordable housing close to campus amenities.
