The North Carolina Naval Militia is a volunteer force that operates as part of the United States Navy. The militia was founded in 1776 and functions as an arm of the state government. The navy deployed gift history to Asheville, North Carolina in 1917 as part of World War I. In 1917, the navy sent a contingent of sailors and Marines to Asheville to participate in World War I. These sailors and Marines were stationed at Fort Fisher until they left for Europe in early 1918. While they were away, the navy donated items to the town from its depot in Asheville.
