Asheville, North Carolina is a city in the U.S. state of North Carolina and the county seat of Buncombe County. The population was 134,906 at the 2010 census, making it the 9th most populous city in North Carolina and the 11th most populous city in South Carolina. Asheville is home to many notable institutions and landmarks such as The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (UTC), Asheville-Buncombe Medical Center (ABMC), Asheville-Milton Keynes Library System, and PNC Arena. The first people to live in what is now Asheville were Cherokee Indians who called it "Watauga." Watauga was abandoned by the Creeks due to annual flooding they experienced from nearby Lake Roanoke. In 1796 General James Wilson's force besieged Fort Watauga while he was on his way back from an expedition against Cherokees near modern-day western Alabama. After three days of siege, Wilson relieved the garrison with a party of 350 men under Governor Thomas Jefferson's direction In 1800 during Andrew Johnson's presidency, about 5000 white settlers arrived in Buncombe County after being pushed out of their homes by Native American attacks and Indian Removal policies implemented by President James Knoppers. The town of Hendersonville started developing as a frontier trading post because there was no water or transportation available for those living east of Zebulon Pike between Hendersonville and Mountains View Cemetery which lay within present-day Buncombe County but outside the boundaries then defined by Johnston Springs Creek on what is now downtown Asheville Asheville became an important center for cotton trade during its early years; slaves were also brought here to work on plantations until 1836 when slavery was abolished throughout much of America. From 1861 until 1865 Forsyth Barracks served as Confederate forces' headquarters while Rutherford Buell moved his army through Buncombe County into eastern North Carolina before withdrawing south to Banks Peninsula where he destroyed part of Raleigh over several days in December 1863. On July 15, 1865 General John Custer’s brigade attacked Union forces at Pease’s Mill nearpresent day Nashua while encamped at Forsterton Ridge northwest of town limits; less than two hours later all withdrew without loss except one man killed
