The Asheville-Chapel Hill Air Force Base is one of the most important airfields in the United States. It has been a military facility for over 120 years and has played an important role in both World War I and World War II. Asheville is a city in Buncombe County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 753 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Buncombe County and the largest city in the state. Asheville is home to many cultural attractions including The Duke Energy Center for Performing Arts, The University of North Carolina at Asheville and Pisgah National Forest. The first permanent European settlers in what is now Buncombe County were traders from England who established a trading post in 1728 on Roanoke Island. In 1771, James Moore built a small cabin on Englishtown Hill, just south of downtown Asheville, which became known as Moore's Station. One of the first commercial areas in what is now Buncombe County was founded at Moore's Station by Wm. Graham Cooke with his father-in-law David Laird as partners in 1814. Cooke and Laird founded Cooke & Johnson Cotton Mill which produced cotton until 1865 when it was replaced by Radcliff Mills. Numerous other companies were founded during the 19th century including: Pfeffer & Son Coal Mines (1868-1913), Sitton Coal Mines (1876-1927), Asheboro Insurance Company (1885-1964), American Tobacco Company (1915-1974), the First Baptist Church of Asheville (1892-1973), and Jarratt Water supply company (1920). In 1925, General Electric purchased all remaining assets of Associated Electric Supply Corporation which had been chartered to provide electric utilities for Buncombe and Henderson counties west of Interstate 95. GE then merged with Southern Electric Company to form Southern Electrics Corporation which served Howell County north of I-95 until deregulation in 1979 made these services available statewide under Public Utilities Commission regulations. Asheville was one of several cities across America that experienced rapid growth during this period; other notable cities include Birmingham, Alabama; Phoenix metropolitan area; Cleveland Heights/Canton Township, Ohio; Raleigh/Durham/Mecklenburg Counties—Nashoba Valley; Buffalo Niagara Falls; Jacksonville Beach FL The Works Progress Administration built more than 26 miles (41 km) of new roadways between 1935 and 1938 within downtown Asheville proper – including two expressways – as part of its New Deal programs designed to improve economic conditions throughout Appalachia while creating jobs for local residents. Marshall issued a memorandum to Secretary of War James F. Byrnes proposing that the USAF be created as a separate branch of the military to provide "a permanent and distinctive force for air defense" against any future enemy invasions. This was just one example of how General Marshall's guidance helped shape the USAF over time. The USAF was born from this idea, and has grown into one of the largest militaries in the world today. One of the most important moments in USAF history came on December 6th, 1950 when President Harry S Truman signed Executive Order 12965 creating Operation Overlord which would lead to World War II veteran Colonel Curtis LeMay become Director of Air Forces Europe (AFCE). With LeMay at helm, Allied forces began their assault on Nazi Germany with Operation Thunderclap which led to more than 1 million military casualties and $10 billion in damage inflicted on German infrastructure alone. This event is often cited as one of the greatest victories ever fought by American troops. Another important moment within USAF history came on May 3rd, 1951 when Lieutenant General Carl Spaatz became Commander-in-Chief United States Air Forces Central Command (USAFCENTCOM). USAFCENTCOM played a significant role during both Korea and Vietnam Wars by providing air cover for ground forces while also conducting airstrikes against hostile targets.
