Asheboro is a small town in the mountain region of North Carolina, United States. It is bordered by Lumberton to the south, Hendersonville to the west and southwest, and Randolph County to the north. The population was 5,815 at the 2010 census. Asheboro is home to two high schools: Asheboro-Macon High School and Hendersonville-Macon High School. The first settler in Asheboro was James Hancey in 1821. In 1827, John Hubbard built a cabin on what is now Main Street. By 1840, there were ten houses in Asheboro. The first school opened in 1851 with nine students. By 1860, there were twenty-one families living in Asheboro. In 1865, General Robert Ewell organized Confederate forces during the American Civil War and skirmished near Asheboro on April 20th when about 2200 Union soldiers under Brigadier General Edwin Forrest attacked his force of 5000 men at Greeneville Creek Bridge over Little River Valley near present day Hendersonville village (now part of Winston Salem). Aftermath of this engagement led to increased Union military activity around Asheboro which caused many businesses and citizens to flee for their lives or take shelter inside churches until it ended several days later when General Ewell withdrew his forces from the area without battle or injury After the war ended, many people returned home but most businesses continued to leave because of lack of business opportunities due to Reconstruction Era regulations prohibiting black Americans from owning property outside of white areas A large influx of African Americans began moving into central North Carolina during Reconstruction period as part of efforts by white Northerners afraid that they would be taken advantage of if they did not share power with African Americans according to historians Deirdreビッチング・ハーツィング and David Witherspoon . Many farmers who had been forced out by Reconstruction period policies moved into downtown areas such as downtown Asheboro where they started new businesses but also experienced political instability as various groups competed for control over resources like jobs, education money and access to new markets
