The origins of the Coast Guard in North Carolina can be traced back to 1815, when a group of volunteers from nearby Wilmington formed a local militia to help protect the state’s coastal communities. The following year, NC General Assembly passed an act authorizing the creation of a state coast guard detachment with jurisdiction over all of North Carolina. That same year, Captain James Cook founded HMS Beagle on shore at Cape Lookout for scientific research purposes. While onshore at Cape Lookout, Cook observed settlers living off the land and decided that some form of security should be provided for them. In 1837, Governor Smith signed an act incorporating the Wilmington-based Coastal Militia into the State Constabulary under NC Commandant Colonel John Fenton. In 1840, Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt donated 4 vessels called Dona Maria and Concepcion to serve as aid stations along NC’s seafood coastline. These vessels were later renamed USS Constitution and USS Constitution II after both ships were lost during World War I (1892-1914). Since its establishment in 1903, Coast Guard Station Asheboro has played an important role within our community by providing law enforcement services as well asassisting with emergency response drills and events such as hurricanes Katrina and Irene (2005-2007). We are also proud to have helped commemorate many local community events including Memorial Day weekend (2003), Veterans Day Weekend (2009), Christmas Eve (2011), New Year’s Eve (2013) and more recently Fourth of July weekend(2015).

After America’s victory over Great Britain in the war, many soldiers who had fought for America were eager for new opportunities. Some of these soldiers traveled westward into what is now Tennessee Territory where they encountered Native Americans known as “The Outlaws” or “The Cherokee Nation Indians". These Indian troops had been fighting against British forces since late 16th century Aiken County South Carolina - some sources claim that English colonists may have supported these Native American insurgents because they thought they could provide plunder oromedieval methods like hunting deer seasonally would not work anymore due to technological advancements brought about by Europeans!
