Asheboro is a small town in the eastern part of North Carolina. It is located on the Pee Dee River, about 25 miles northeast of Charlotte and 50 miles northwest of Raleigh. The town was founded in 1847 by Augustus C. Ashe and his wife, Emma B. Ashe, two women who were inspired to start a coffee shop after reading an article about how coffee has helped improve relationships between people and their local businesses. The first Ashe Coffee Shop opened in 1847 in what is now the Main Street Business District. The shop was known for its unique coffee beans, which it roasted and packaged themselves. In 1865, Augustus C. Ashe Jr., one of the original founders of Asheboro, passed away; however, his son continued to operate the business until 1931 when it merged with another store within the town limits to form the present-day store building (the original building still stands). The first espresso machine was built at Asheboro Coffee Shop in 1945 by Luigi Anelli from Italy. At that time espresso machines were very new technology and took a long time to be accepted as standard equipment in coffee shops around the world! The first commercially successful espresso machine was created by Joe Donatelli at La Pavoni's Italian Restaurant in New York City in 1954!

It is also the home of The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and its largest employer. The first European settlement in present-day Asheboro was by Scots-Irish immigrants who arrived during the early 1800s. In 1839, General Beauregard founded what would become UNC Chapel Hill as part of his unsuccessful effort to unify all of South Carolina into one common entity under Ulysses S. Grant's presidency. When UNC Chapel Hill became an NCAA Division I school in 1924, it chose to remain associated with the Carolinas rather than join the larger southern conference that had been formed since 1869 when UNC Charlotte seceded from NC State University to form its own university. In 1927, following a referendum vote by Raleigh residentsmonkey business - a humorous slogan used on local street signs throughout the 1960s and 1970s for businesses which refused to comply with city ordinances regulating noise levels - Asheboro voters passed a resolution disapproving of this monkey business slogan and replacing it with "No More Noise." This resolve remains unchanged today as no new businesses have adopted it in recent years; instead they continue use "Noise Free" as their motto or symbol on their buildings/storefronts/commercial signage across town (though some choose not to do so). Today's economy is based largely on education and research at UNC Chapel Hill and other nearby colleges and universities as well as various medical technology companies located within downtown Asheboro proper (including two large pharmaceutical firms). Some light industrial activities are still conducted within town limits though these are declining in importance due to advances made in electronic manufacturing elsewhere in the region. Despite this changeover from an agricultural economy to one more dominated by industry over time, many residents maintain close ties with their farming background both through family farm operations and local fundraising events such as hog drives which provide much needed economic assistance to small farmers struggling through difficult times.

The first cafe was opened in Istanbul by a group of Frenchmen working for an Ottoman military officer. Coffee started to be traded and sold during the 18th century and Dutch traders also became interested in it. In 1819, coffee was introduced to Europe through Portuguese traders who brought it back from India. There was some movement of coffee beans around the world during this time, with different countries getting their hands on varying amounts of different types of coffee beans.

Asheboro is home to two universities and three hospitals- Wake Forest University Medical Center, NC State University- Raleigh and Medical College of Virginia- Charlottesville. In addition to its downtown area which contains several shops and restaurants as well as an Asheboro High School football field and baseball diamond, many parts of the town are occupied by Fayetteville Regional Airport which serves both Asheboro and neighboring towns Fayetteville and New Bern.
