The town was founded in 1851 by farmers from Glasgow and Edinburgh, Scotland who immigrated to what is now Buncombe County. The name "Apex" comes from an Indian word meaning "headquarters." The first post office was established in 1854 and the first school in 1857. In 1870, Apex became a city when it incorporated as a dry village with a population of 100. In 1908, Apex annexed the neighboring towns of Townsend and Weaverville which had similar demographics but smaller populations. In 1916, local resident Wylie Sikes started construction on what would become the world's first concrete-framed structure with an internal layer of metal mesh to prevent holes created by rainwater infiltration into his home basement below ground level.
