Albemarle is a town in Scotland County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 9,719 at the 2000 census. Albemarle is part of the Raleigh–Durham Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Albemarle area has been settled by humans and other animals for thousands of years. In 1814, General Andrew Jackson built his headquarters near what is now Albemarle Square. The square was originally named Federal Hall after the U.S. Congress which met there at that time. The first white settler in Albemarle was James McGill who arrived in 1776 and claimed land west of present-day downtown Raleigh on what is now McIntosh Street. He named his settlement "Montgomery" after his War of 1812 commander, Sir George Montgomery. In 1781, another Scotsman named Alexander Robertson came to North Carolina from Fife in Scotland with three families and began to farm along the Yadkin River north of what is now Durham Countyline. His initial land grant included present day eastern Johnston County and all of western Wake County as well as the townships within those counties today: Bernersville (now Gaston), Chapel Hill (now Carrboro), Cary (now Apex), Durham (nowayetteville), Epps Bridge (now Lumberton), Johnston City (later Jacksonville) and Newton Court House (later Newbern). Robertson's family moved eastward across Yadkin Creek into Johnston County when it became clear that he would not be granted additional territory because no one wanted to settle there because of Indian attacks or hunting opportunities available closer to Cherokee Nation lands east of Rutherford Forest Park on the Currituck River where Robertson had earlier established a military post known as Fort Nashoba or Fort Nashoba & Pee Dee Plantation about four miles upstream from today's Alamance Courthouse off Denton Highway in Randolph County on July 10, 1781. On January 1st 1782 two more Scotsmen - Alexander Campbell and John Manson - also landed at Roanoke Island on February 14th following a sailing ship commanded by Captain James Cook which left Portsmouth Harbour on December 12th 1700 with men under Lieutenant Colonel Edward Boscawen including fourteen Africans called "Boscawen's Bay Boys." They were brought overland across several weeks during spring weather conditions only to find their passage blocked by snowdrifts near present day Burlington Shoals due south of Roanoke Island off modern day Outer Banks Highway #1 between Elizabeth City & Beaufort Counties while they were ashore trying unsuccessfully to cross latitude 29°05'N longitude 175°25'W . After being stranded for several days they walked out overland into North Carolina arriving early May 2nd1782 just before winter set in leading some people back home via sea shore route around Cape Fear/Cherokee Point unloading their goods at Present Day Wilmington Pier then wading through tidal waters upriver until reaching Brunswick Harbor where they unloaded their goods aboard a small boat before returning home via Pamlico Sound
