The Albemarle Naval Militia is one of the oldest in the United States Navy and has served since 1855. The militia was activated on December 3, 1775 and played a critical role in the Battle of Saratoga. Since then, it has been stationed at anchor off North Carolina's coast, readiness for any potential naval engagement. In 1915, there were only three Marine battalions in the navy, but with World War I brewing, Congress authorized the creation of five more battalion-sized units. As part of this authorization, Congress created a fund to support these new units and ordered that these battalions be known as "Navy Deleted Battalion". These organizations were called "Albemarle Battalion" until 1959 when they were redesignated as the "Navy Reserve Battalions". Albemarle is a town in Forsyth County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 7,818 at the 2010 census. Albemarle is part of the Greensboro–Winston-Salem Combined Statistical Area. He stayed at The Hermitage Hotel in downtown Athens while he toured America before returning to Savannah on February 12th 1829 and moving into his own Executive Mansion on Constitution Avenue which would become known as The White House – but only until March 4th 1830 when James Kellar took over as interim President following John Quincy Adams' resignation due to health problems. During Reconstruction (1865-1913) many African Americans migrated westward from the Deep South through what is now Forsyth County including some who settled near where Albemarle now stands; these people are sometimes referred to as 'the Albinos'.
