The Albemarle National Guard was organized on July 2, 1861, as the North Carolina National Guard. The unit was first called the 1st Battalion of North Carolina Volunteer Infantry. On November 15, 1861, it was redesignated the 1st Regiment of North Carolina Volunteers and on December 12th it became a regiment in the Confederate States Army. On October 25, 1862, the regiment lost its colonel and all but one member of its battalion when rebel General Robert E. Lee destroyed their camp at University Hill. The regiment then fought in three Battles of Bull Run (August 27-29), Fredericksburg (December 13-15), and Chancellorsville (April 9-11). After these engagements, most of the regiment manged to retreat back across Rappahannock River to New Bern until they could be reassembled there on May 11th. In all, this battalion participated in twenty nine battles duringthe war. After hostilities ended on April 9th 1865, many soldiers from Albemarle were mustered out or disbanded because of their age or wounds sustained in battle. One group who did not disband however was that unit's band which continued playing for the next year until finally disbanding on June 6nd 1865 due to lack of volunteers for another tour overseas

Albemarle is a town in the U.S. state of North Carolina, located on the Outer Banks of the Outer Banks National Seashore. As of the 2010 census, its population was 8,830. Albemarle is one of two towns in NC that are both city-states - the other being Charlotte - and it has a total population of only 3,500 residents as opposed to 7,000+ for Charlotte proper. The first European to visit Albemarle was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524 when he landed there with his ships from Italy looking for new land to explore after his return from America's Northeast coast. He named it "Albemarle" after Prince Alberico d'Este who had been sent by King Francis I of France to explore North Carolina on behalf of Queen Elizabeth I and her husband Philip II of Spain. The first permanent settler in Albemarle was Captain John Smith who sailed upriver from Norfolk Island on July 17th 1606 and landed at what is now known as Point Lobos beach near present day Albemarle County Courthouse Square following his failed attempt to find a route through then-unbroken Cape Fear Mountains into Wilmington further downriver. The first town charter was granted on October 6th 1607 by Governor James Moore when he arrived with 300 soldiers under command from England at Fort Tryon upon arriving via horseback across what is now called Tryon Bridge over the Catawba River estuary just upstream from where current day Point Lobos (at latitude 27° 07’ N) stands today about halfway between Wilmington and Raleigh/Durham Counties along US 301A (the original routing then followed NC 26W).

Albemarle is a town in Cabarrus County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 2,930 at the 2010 census. Albemarle was founded in 1792 by General James Moores and his brothers-in-law, Colonel John McDowell and Captain George Washington. It became part of the Confederate States of America during the American Civil War. The town had a post office from 1836 until it was discontinued in 1865. Albemarle is located on U.S Route 421 north of Raleigh. The first European settlement in what is now Cabarrus County was by traders from Virginia who went ashore at Spanish Fort on Roanoke Island in 1606. In 1792, General James Moores and his brother-in-law Colonel John McDowell established a small farming community near present day Albemarle after discovering rich coal deposits thereabouts. After successfully negotiating an advantageous trade with Spain for this valuable resource, the Moores family began to build a plantation here which they named Albermarle (meaning "place of white oak"). This growth led to increased competition among settlers for land, so much so that some Developers started offering large sums of money for any parcel of ground that could be put together into a village or town site! The first settler to arrive in what is now Albemarle Township was Drury Lewis who platted it off as part of Wake County on November 12th, 1800. By 1827 there were over sixty homes and three churches built within one mile (1 km) square around what would become known as "the Village". On July 4th 1830 Samuel Ashe purchased 1/2 acre (0.18 hectare) of land adjoining present day Albemarle Court House Square from Drury Lewis for $500 sterling payable within five years or he would have sold it back to him at face value! In 1836 US Post Office Department decided against restarting mail service between Raleigh and Albemarle because tracks had not yet been laid across Robeson Creek; however package service continued until 1865 when all mail services were discontinued due to advances in railroad technology! This ended almost 150 years of continuous mailing between Raleigh and Albemarles residents!
