The Albemarle Regiment of the North Carolina Militia was first organized in 1775. The regiment served during the American Revolution, and fought at Saratoga, Yorktown and Battle of Camden. In 1812, the regiment was redesignated as the 1st North Carolina Volunteer Infantry Regiment. The regiment served in the Mexican-American War and participated in the Battle of Buena Vista. The regiment was disbanded in 1867.
Albemarle is a town in Alamance County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,838 at the 2010 census. Albemarle is part of the Raleigh–Durham metropolitan area. The Albemarle River flows through the town. The first people to live in what is now Albemarle County were the Lenape Native Americans. They were followed by English settlers and traders who built their homes on high ground overlooking the river. In 1795, British General James Cornwallis invaded North Carolina and burned all of what is now Alamance County before marching into Virginia with his army. This event left behind a lasting impression on many people in this area as it showed how powerful Britain was and demonstrated its intentions to control much of America. In 1819, Tennessee Congressman John Sevier moved his family from Loudoun County, Virginia to Alamance County and began developing land hereabouts for farming purposes. By 1827 he had erected a cabin near present-day downtown Albemarle which functioned as his home for the next forty years or so until he sold it in 1868 to Major General Andrew Johnson.* During Reconstruction following America's Civil War (1861-1865), there was significant African American activity within Albemarle due to its proximity to Charlotte* Chatham*, Gaston*, Johnston* and other large black cities across central North Carolina*. Consequently, African American businesses became prevalent throughout Alamance County during this time period(*). However, these businesses did not have much success because white residents generally considered them inferior* (*). In fact, some whites even went so far as to boycott these businesses because they felt that African Americans were taking advantage of white residents [*]. This tension continued until after World War II when things changed completely(*). Afterward*, African Americans gradually gained legal rights within society while white citizens slowly regained their Pre-War attitudes towards them*.

The Albemarle County seat was first established in 1751 when surveyors named the area "Albemarle" after the French general and founder of NC, Marquis de Lafayette. The town was platted in 1779 by James Robertson, a Scotch-Irishman who had come to North Carolina as part of the large Loyalist migration following the American Revolution. At first, Albemarle was primarily a farming community with modest industry. However, over time it became an important center for trade and commerce in the region. In 1819, Albemarle became one of only two counties in North Carolina to be chartered as a city, preceded only by Raleigh. In 1865, Confederate General Robert Ewell's army invaded North Carolina during the Civil War and Siege of Durham. After unsuccessfully attempt at retreat through Union territory, Ewell ordered his troops to march into eastern Albemarle County. The resulting battle led to more than 100 fatalities and several thousand casualties on both sides. Thousands more were taken prisoner or driven from their homes; many remained living as refugees until they could be evacuated back home before winter set in. In 1868, Albemarle voters passed a resolution endorsing statehood for NC; however, due to objections from some landowners within the county insisting on continued allegiance to Virginia under their rule (the other county being Cumberland), it did not take effect until 1870 when NC become fully independent from Virginia
