This officer, Samuel Sloat, took part in Commodore John Farragut’s successful attempt to stop Spanish ships off Florida in 1837. Sloat was awarded an honorary commission as a lieutenant colonel by President James K. Polk in 1849 for his service on that campaign. The first Coast Guard station was established at Newport News, Virginia. After World War I, there were large increases in the number of people working for the Coast Guard because of war-time mobilization. In 1924, Congress passed the National Defense Authorization Act which created the Coast Guard as an independent service with its own budget and headquarters. The Coast Guard began shipments of food and supplies to soldiers fighting in World War II. In 1947, the United States Supreme Court ruled that state boundaries did not apply to the Coast Guards and allowed it to operate within states. This change helped make the Coast Guard one of America's most feared law enforcement organizations. The coast guard has been involved in many emergencies including hurricanes Katrina and Sandy; both events caused massive damage along coastal areas. Today, the coast guard continues its important role in protecting our coasts by providing support during disasters such as Hurricanes Irma and Maria; responding to piracy threats off American coasts; and monitoring illegal fishing activities off our coasts

Albemarle, North Carolina is a town in Swain County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. Albemarle is part of the Greensboro–Fort Mill Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is located on the Yadkin River near its confluence with the Tar River. The first white person to set foot on what is now Albemarle soil was Captain John Smith in 1607 when he and his men arrived from Plymouth Colony during what would be known as America's Discovery Expedition. For many years after that initial sighting, it was thought that the river's name derived from an ancient Indian word meaning "beautiful place." However, more evidence suggests that this origin story may not be true at all--the word likely comes from a Cherokee term meaning "land of milk and honey."
