When the United States was founded in 1776, there were no army. The first U.S. military forces were raised in 1781 when a small force of militiamen resisted British occupation of North Carolina. The first American army was only three hundred men strong, and it consisted mostly of volunteers from the local militias. The American Revolution began with a series of skirmishes between Patriot forces and British regulars. After more than two years of fighting, the Americans had achieved independence and organized their own military system. In 1783, they formed an army under General George Washington to resist another British campaign against them. The American Army became one of the world's most powerful armies by 1812, thanks to its well-maintained infrastructure and efficient organization. During the Mexican-American War (1846–1848), America's new navy helped turn tide against Mexico while the army fought on land at multitudes of locations around California and Texas. By 1860, however, America's largely Unionized army was too large for effective counterinsurgency operations in a fast-growing country like hers; instead she turned to battlefield technology in order to winthe Civil War (1861–1865). After the war ended, America rapidly expanded her military by ordnance acquisition (eager to build an empire) and personnel recruitment (to maintain manpower parity with Great Britain). This process led to what is now known as "the modern Army." Between 1867 and 1902, all but four U.S states joined the Union—up from only three percent at Confederation—and thus contributed nearly 50 percent of all federal troops during that time period*. As of 2009, the Albemarle County Artillery Regiment was a part of North Carolina's National Guard. The regiment was organized on December 12, 1847 and disbanded on October 14, 1865.
Albemarle, North Carolina is a town located in Dinwiddie County, Virginia. The population was 10,457 at the 2010 census. Albemarle is part of the Alexandria-Arlington- Petersburg, VA Metropolitan Statistical Area. It lies on the Rappahannock River and is bordered by Prince William County to the east, Frederick County to the north and southwest, and Dinwiddie County to the west. The origins of Albemarle are obscure but it appears to have been founded by settlers from England in 1724. The name Albemarle comes from Old English alb meaning "a white rock," given its appearance on a map of Virginia in 1607 as an isolated peak rising above a group of scattered hills near Princess Anne's Springs (present day Annandale). In 1757 Governor James Kenedy granted survey rights for Albemarle Township to Thomas Fairfax and his brother James who then donated land for a courthouse and schoolhouse which were completed in 1758. In 1833 Albemarle citizens voted 2-to-1 against incorporation into Richmond because they felt its location would make it difficult to compete with Petersburg as an educational center. Albemarle experienced significant growth during World War II when thousands of African American soldiers served in the war effort or were drafted here. After VE Day (the end of World War II) many black Americans brought their families back home where they established new businesses and founded churches such as Ebenezer Baptist Church (founded 1942), Methodist Episcopal Zion Church (1946), Tuskegee Airmen Memorial AME Zion Congregation (1945), First United Presbyterian Church (1893) and Hazelwood Baptist Church (1966). Many African American entrepreneurs continue their businesses today such as Harry Reid’s Reid Tobacco Company which has been open since 1924; Joe Gibbs' Southern Service Corporation which manufactures truck parts; Alice Paul's Elijah Muhammad Temple Incorporated; Roy Moore's Judicial Watch Foundation; Louis Farrakhan's Nation of Islam chapter Plantation House Mosque etc.; Clarence Thomas' Supreme Court confirmation hearing took place at nearby Anacostia Mall despite heavy protests outside including blockades by some members of Congress who claimed that Thomas should not have been confirmed because he did not disclose his religious beliefs although he later recanted these views
The Army has always been a subscribing and occasional gift-giver. It is not clear when the military became sogatey with giving gifts, but by the late 1800s gift giving had become more common within the military. Gifting became so popular in the military because of how it symbolized support for one's unit and also showed that individuals were willing to put their time and effort into the military. The modern army still uses many of the same traditions as ancient armies, such as gifting items such as swords, armor, horses, or dogs to members of the armed forces. Gift giving began to decline in popularity within both armies during World War II because of its high cost and difficulty in getting goods to troops on battlefields. However, there are some reports that suggests that this may have been due to trends within society at large which no longer support giving gifts to others. It is interesting to note that even though gift giving may have declined in popularity among both armies during World War II, it may still be a common tradition within certain branches of society today.

Albemarle is a town in Alamance County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,191 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Alamance County. The town was founded in 1794 by John Albemarle and grows up around the Episcopal church that he built. The town changed hands several times during the 19th century, but it always returned to Albemarle until 1911 when it became part of Raleigh. Albemarle has a rich history dating back to its founding. In 1794, John Albemarle settled here with his wife and four children after migrating from Virginia. He built a small cabin on the banks of the Catawba River and named it Albemarle after his home state of Virginia. Over time, many people followed Albemarle's lead andsettled here including General James Moncrief who later commanded British forces in North Carolina during the American Revolution In 1819, Charlottesville passed an ordinance allowing slaveowners within their borders to free their slaves as long as they resided within two miles of their plantation homes- which made Albemarle an even more important stop for freed slaves on their way northward.
