Yonkers is a small town in the southern tip of New York state. It is bordered by Westchester County to the south, Putnam County to the north, and Rockland County to the east. The population was 453 at the 2010 census. Yonkers was first settled in 1793 by Loyalist refugees from England who had fled during the American Revolution. The name "Yonkers" means "place where they are holding their meeting." The town's rich history began with its founding as a British military post on an old Indian trading post called Bushkill Point on April 15, 1793. George Washington appointed Colonel James Clinton commandant of the post and residents were greeted with drums and cymbals when they arrived. In 1800, General John Sullivan abandoned Bushkill Point for Yonkers after discovering that it was infested with Englishman-eating animals. The fortifications at Bushkill Point were never used again and all that remains today are some brick walls and foundations. In 1809, John Palfrey bought 720 acres (276 hectares) of land in what is now Yonkers from Nicholas deLesseps for $2 per acre ($10 per square foot). He named his new development Palfreytown after himself. Palfreytown quickly became a center for agriculture because he had access to good water resources and fertile soil. His crops included hay, oats, potatoes, turnips, carrots and apples; he also built a mill run by water power which processed flour into breads, pastries and other foodsstuff until 1828 when it closed down due to competition from larger mills in New York City. During the 19th century there was significant development in Yonkers including: Townspeople constructed two churches – Stonedown Presbyterian Church (1827) located on Main Street between Jefferson Avenue (now Roosevelt Boulevard) and Broadway; while Second Presbyterian Church (1859), located on Washington Place between Broadway/Jefferson Avenue intersection now known as Park Avenue opened its doors just days before America’s Civil War started; both churches remain active today as part of Congregational United Churches of Christ congregation membership numbering more than 4500 congregants performing over 150 services each week within walking distance of their respective congregations located throughout downtown Yonkers vicinity; construction commenced on several schools including Holy Cross School #1 which opened May 3rd 1861 following completion of building project begun February 25th 1860 consisting of 8 classrooms 27 feet x 24 feet @ 1st floor level under large red octagon dome canopy supported by 5 white columns 50 feet long & 14 feet high designating school property line extending northerly 6 rods (& buildings facing street); Donaldson Academy #1 situated west side lot along Clinton Ave 2 blocks south from current day corner Jefferson Blvd./Clinton Ave., fronting Lot Line Extension eastward measuring approx 54x24x36 inches inside an open space or garage having been built prior thereto & still entombed beneath parkway surface w/ elevators entrance & drive thru w’ Elevator Hall leading into single story Administration Building containing Music Room/Choir Room w’ bell tower overlooking South Side Oval DriveWalkway encircling oval lead out 12′ deep w’ twin towers rising above elevator shafts providing commanding view over Oval Drive toward Center City
