In 1814, when Canada gained independence from Great Britain and merged with that country to form Confederation under Sir John Auld’s government (the first Canadian province), Yonkers became part of Canada proper as well as Ontario untilratch following Confederation when Ontario was reduced to three provinces with Toronto becoming its capital city (and thus continuing Canadan sovereignty over Yonkers). Yonkers is a town in Westchester County, New York, United States. The population was 59,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New York City metropolitan area. Yonkers had been an Indian village known as Tuscarora until 1795 when it became part of the Dutch colony of West India Islands. In 1814 it was annexed by Albany and renamed after George Washington's home state of Virginia, but reverted to its original name in 1824. The first settler in Yonkers was Nicholas Noyes who arrived from England on October 15, 1795 and claimed land east of what is now Main Street and south of present-day Union Avenue. The town started as a small trading post called Natick on November 3rd with twenty-five people living there including nine men and seven women plus four children and their families who were also required to help tend the post. On January 1st 1800 John Harden bought two lots in what is now Clinton Square for $200 each from Nicholas Noyes making Yonkers his permanent home. The first blocks built were named Harden Block (now First Avenue), Broadway, Clinton Square (now 2nd Avenue), Wappingers Road (now 4th Avenue) and Cedar Lane which later became Allen Street In 1814 Albany annexed it into the new province of New York due to increasing tensions between Great Britain and France over control of North America following the Napoleonic Wars; however, since Albany lay within Massachusetts' boundaries its name reverted back to that of Virginiainy on May 25th 1824 when all New York counties were reorganized under that system. During the 1830s many farmers moved into Yonkers from upstate New York because they could not get government loans or support through other channels so they began farming using irrigation systems based on pumping water out of rivers such as Niagara Falls or Lake Ontario once their fields had been tilled This wayof life continued until about 1910 when machine tools came along which changed everything with regard to agriculture including fertilizer application etc Another big change during this period was transportation as railroads came along which allowed farmers to ship their crops directly to market instead von driving them over long distances
