The Yonkers Naval Shipyard was founded in 1865 and has been providing the nation with naval ships ever since. The shipyards were especially busy during World War II, producing warships for both American and British fleets. After the war, the yards went through a period of modernization and expansion, becoming a major player in the maritime industry. Today, the navyshipyards are still one of New York City's most important economic engines, employing over 1,000 workers. Naval shipbuilding began in America as early as 1795 when Captain John Montresor built a small sloop called HMS Rattlesnake off Long Island. Over time, other sailors started building their own boats and sailing them to sea for themselves or selling them to others. In 1814, Captain Alfred Thayer named his vessel USS Constitution after United States President James K. Polk. During World War I, America's largest naval engagement of that era took place at Hampton Roads in Virginia Beach on August 7-9th 1914. Thanks to America's new dreadnought submarines made by Electric Boat Works of Groton Connecticut (later renamed General Dynamics), American forces destroyed more than 25 enemy vessels while sinking two ships belonging to Germany which had allied themselves with Austria-Hungary against Great Britain. This victory marked an important turning point in U.S.-British relations; it would not be until 1945 that they again fought a full-blown war together against Nazi Germany alone!

The name "Yonkers" comes from two Dutch words for "hill" – Nettersdam and Wynkersdamschap – and is pronounced yohn-kuhs. The first English settlement in what is now Yonkers was established in 1624 as Killingly by colonists from London who named it after their hometown of Kingston-upon-Hull, England (now Hull). In 1795, the town was founded by Alexander Hamilton's father-in-law James Hunter as an agricultural village on a small hill near the Finger Lakes because it offered good land for farming and could be accessed by wagon road from other settlements in western New York. Yonkers was a small town in New York State before the American Civil War. It was located on the southern border of Albany County, about 18 miles south of Albany and six miles east of Rochester. The mill towns at the edge of the Finger Lakes had been trading with China for centuries, but it wasn't until 1795 that Yonkers got its own post office. By 1860, there were only around 100 people living in Yonkers. The town's first school opened in 1819. In 1826, a dam was built to supply water to the village and then to supply the local mills; this contributed to the growth of Yonkers over time. The first store in Yonkers opened in 1828 and soon became a popular stop on horseback rides through central New York. One can still find some remnants of these days such as an old lighthouse and a restored steamboat engine house which are now open for visitors during summertime. During World War I, many residents left their homes to fight; by 1919, only about 30 remained within the village limits. However, thanks to wartime procurement programs run by President Woodrow Wilson, much of what had once been destroyed or used up in war became available for reconstruction following hostilities ended – including new housing developments such as projects like Riverside Drive and Mechanic Street which remain today among one of America's most prestigious neighborhoods In recent years, Yonkers has become known for its annual Yom Kippur parade which takes place down Riverside Drive from North Avenue into Central Park concurrent with St Patrick's Day Parade
Yonkers is a borough in the U.S. state of New York, located on the eastern edge of the Bronx County. The population was 97,924 as of 2018. Yonkers was founded in 1813 by Captain John Stevens and is one of the oldest continuously inhabited municipalities in New York State. The first recorded mention of Yonkers occurs in a deed from February 17, 1676, which refers to "the town called Yonkers" east of the Hackensack River. By 1800, there were over 100 homes and businesses within what is now Yonkers Borough. In 1813, Captain John Stevens founded what is now Yonkers with land he had acquired from Native Americans near what is now Calverton Park. The name means "place where people live." It wasn't until after his death that it became known as "Yonker". In 1868, when Calverton Park was annexed into Yonkers Township, its residents voted to keep their own governance system separate from that of the township's other citizens - something that continues to this day among many residents in both townships and villages throughout New York City. This unique form of government continued until 1955 when it was abolished by New York State Legislature as part-of an effort to simplify municipal government throughout the state under provisions set forth in the State Constitution article XI section 9(a). In 1925, when Rye Brook Township merged into Yonkers Township effective October 1st thereof due to population growth within that municipality; also on October 1st 1925 active civilians were discharged from all posts (except for police) at Fort Hamilton Barracks located at 242 Fulton Street north side between Barclay and First Streets during days preceding local elections being held therein pursuant thereto; thenceforward all such posts remaining garrisoned were manned by military personnel only wearing civilian clothes while performing their duties...An act authorizing conversions to military duty at Fort Hamilton Barracks took effect on November 15th 1926...The fortifications are still standing today but are no longer used for militia purposes or troop training exercises...On January 2nd 1937 a detachment from Company A 7th Infantry Regiment stationed at Fort Hamilton Barracks opened fire upon peaceful demonstrators gathered outside Headquarters building boycotting IWW Local 7’s National Convention taking place there; ensuing violence led to several injuries including one dead and 30+ arrested...On September 12th 1938 an act repealing sections 10A through 10D & substituting new sections 11 through 13 came into effect effective immediately following passage by Assembly Committee…This act repealed most aspects associated with corrupt officials functions having been vested exclusively with former Board members who had already retired prior thereto…On May 25th 1969 Mayor Edward Messel announced plans for construction of a new $50 million dollar transportation center adjacent to current Hammonds Ferry Road just west (northwest) of Interstate 95 adjacent highway exit ramp off I-95 using eminent domain power granted by then Governor Nelson Rockefeller…this project has yet to materialize however redevelopment efforts have commenced nearby
