The New York National Guard is one of the oldest and most important organizations in the United States. It was formed on July 24, 1792 by act of Congress as a military force to support the state's militia forces. The Guard has played an important role in American history, first during the Revolutionary War and then throughout the 19th century. The Guardsmen were originally organized into battalions and companies but soon became a separate battalion or company per state. In 1814, New York City raised its own regiment which became known as the 1st Regiment of Foot Guards (later 2nd Regiment). In 1846, New York City raised another regiment which became known as the 3rd Regiment of Foot Guards (later 4th Regiment). In 1861, Congress authorized creation of a 5th Infantry Regiment and 8th Artillery Regiment to serve in what would become the national guard. The 1st and 2nd Regiments served with distinction in several battles during the Civil War including Battle of Antietam where they lost 25% their number of men killed/ wounded/Missing in Action (KIA) while also playing major part in that battle. Following World War II, many members of the old regimental units rejoined their old unit counterparts or simply served out their natural lives without undergoing any conversion or mobilization process. However, it was not until 1959 that all veteran NGF soldiers were mustered into federal service under President Eisenhower's "National Defense Act." This act established both active duty Army Reserve components as well as NationalGuard units within each state's Armed Forces Reserve system. Since then, there have been numerous conversions and mobilizations through various events such as Desert Storm; Operation Iraqi Freedom; Hurricane Katrina; Spanish - American War; Korean War etcetera. Today there are over 170 thousand active duty NGF troops stationed across America performing duties from homeland security to peacekeeping missions around our globe!

The name Yonkers originates from the word "yonk" or "yonder". The first Europeans to visit what is now Yonkers were Dutch traders in 1614. The area that is now Yonkers was part of the Mohawk Nation until 1764 when they ceded it to Great Britain under the Treaty of Paris. In 1786, John D'Angelo sold land at present-day Washington Street and Empire Boulevard for £1,000 to Nicholas Hackman. In 1812, George Washington Carver bought three acres south of current-day State Avenue for $10 from Nicholas Hackman's son JamesHackman. Many young men choose to leave their families behind because they could not find work outside their neighborhoods while others decided to take risks by moving away from home during an unstable time period with little guarantee that they would return home soon enough (Larson & Keesing). Many people who left didn't return home until later in life when technology made it easier for them to do so such as Bing Crosby who remarried after leaving America (Fenton). However most residents did come back Home eventually due mostly due to economic reasons like increased production values associated with wartime efforts (Keesing). Additionally some residents chose not Returning Home out considerations about how difficult it had been living/working overseas during peacetime when prices were much lower; also many people felt guilty about having returned before WWII was over (Fenton). The post-war era saw a few changes overall with more Americans moving back into cities but also more businesses opening up throughout western New York due largely towardstaxes being lowered nationally through the Eisenhower administration creating fresh investment opportunities (Larson & Keesing; Parshall).
