In the early 1800s, Yonkers was a small community located in upstate New York that was home to several military installations. The town was first established as a garrison for the British army and soon became an important stop on troop routes used by the American Revolution. In 1792, when George Washington founded the United States Army, Yonkers became its Headquarters and it remained so until 1949 when it was renamed Fort Wadsworth. From then until 1991, it served as NATO's Allied Commander Europe. The fortifications of Fort Wadsworth were erected throughout the late 18th century to protect New York City from possible attack by French and Indian forces during the War of 1812. The first fortification consisted of a single artillery battery and two blockhouses constructed on an elevated site overlooking present-day Yonkers. By 1814, however, there were six batteries at Fort Wadsworth with an total strength of twenty guns each. In addition to its artillery armament, Fort Wadsworth also possessed three 12-pounder cannons and four 9-pounder cannons. During World War I, both American Expeditionary Forces (AEF) and British Expeditionary Force (BEF) camps were located within easy reach of Fortress Wadsworth. The AEF camp occupied land immediately east of the fortifications while BEF camped just north of them on high ground overlooking Governors Island in Brooklyn Bay. During World War II both American and British troops stationed atFort Wadsworth participated in hostilities against Japan along with other adjacent units including Garrison units at Ronkonkoma Naval Shipyard andBrooklyn Bridge Airfield. As part of demobilization proceedings following World War II many military installations were closed or sold off such as FtWadsworth which became part of the city government's general services department in 1951; later becoming part of Department Of Stored Resources Administration within city hall). The Yonkers military gift history begins with General George Washington's purchase of a rifle from Captain John Armstrong in 1775. The first settler in what became Yonkers was Nicholas Davenport in 1777. He had come from Connecticut with his family. In 1824 George Washington Carver settled here as part of a land grant to him by President James K. Polk. Carver was a farmer who worked for Mr. Ford on Long Island Sound before coming to Yonkers and starting his own business there in 1881. Many prominent people have been associated with Yonkers- including Cyrus McCormick, Alexander Hamilton Beach and Irvington Mayor William Fenton died here while serving as Mayor of Manhattan during World War II; he was buried at Arlington National Cemetery nearby). On November 15, 1692, colonists named John Norris established a small settlement on the site now known as North Oneida Street within present-day Scarsdale which they called "Norris'. They were forced out by Native Americans about two years later due to their lack of an agreement with local Indian leaders concerning hunting rights near what is now North Oneida Lake (the former site of Park Avenue). The area now known as Yonkers was annexed by Scarsdale in 1814 following an invasion led by General Philip Schuyler that destroyed much property within that town; this event has been cited as one reason whyScarsdale developed into one of Westchester's most prosperous municipalities during that time period." Yonkers, New York is a small town located in upstate New York. It is bordered by the towns of Rome and Westchester to the south, and Schenectady to the north. The population was 21,711 at the 2010 census. Yonkers owes its name to John Fenton, an early settler who named it after his home village of Yonkers in Upper Manhattan. The first white person to live in what is now Yonkers was Nicholas-Jacques Conte on April 12, 1795. In 1807, a group of Dutch immigrants settled here and built a cabin near where the current infrastructure for transportation now stands. By 1814, there were about fifty families living in what would become Yonkers. The first school was founded in 1815 by Revs. Timothy Dwight and James Caldwell at a site that is now part of Prospect Park Cemetery; it became known as "Guilder's School." The first store in Yonkers opened on October 6th, 1825 by John Henniker with supplies from Albany. The first post office was established here on January 15th, 1827 by Cyrus Vance (the son of George Washington). In 1830–31 Judge George Stephenson erected a log courthouse which served as the government center for this small community until it burned down in 1841 while being used as a jail; this event helped spur development around this location including brick buildings which replaced the original logs during much of the 19th century. In 1865–66 Edwin Mecom built one of America's earliest skyscrapers – Oneonta Tower – at 221 Elmwood Avenue east of Main Street; this building still stands today and has been renovated several times since its inception. During World War II many local businesses took advantage of wartime shortages resulting from sequestration policies set by President Franklin D Roosevelt; these businesses included munitions manufacturers such as DuPont Paper Company and General Electric Company; textiles companies such as Spandex Corporation and Cotton Recycling Company Inc.; agricultural producers such as Indianola Refining & Marketing Co., Inc., Empire Packers & Stockyards Inc., Agricultural Implement Warehouse (AIW), Pabst Brewing Company (PBS) and Goudreau Cheese Products Co.; allocating resources needed for war production within their respective industries while minimizing layoffs or closures throughout Yankee County due to peacetime restrictions placed upon industry by FDR himself
