Yonkers, New York is a town located in Westchester County, New York, United States. The population was 69,822 at the 2010 census. Yonkers is one of the most populous towns in the county and covers an area of 9 square miles. The first settlement in what is now Yonkers was made on October 24, 1718 by Major John Barker and his men under the leadership of Colonel George Washington. The town's namesake was General Anthony Wayne who fought in the American Revolution and also served as Mayor from 1821 to 1824. In 1861, after the Civil War ended, Yonkers became a part of New York State and lost its independent status. It regained its independence as a municipality on February 14th of that year. The high school graduate rate for Yonkers residents is above average; however, it falls below that for other municipalities in Westchester County. According to Forbes Magazine’s “2010 Top 25 Townsranked by Median Household Income” report released in December of 2009,[1] Yonkers ranked #4 out of 25 municipalities with median household incomes over $100k per year (the others being Middletown#2 at #19, Valhalla#3 at #25 and Ossining#4 at #27). Additionally according to “New York Times” article entitled “The Disappearing Middle Class: How did Yonkers fare since 2000?”[2] between 2001-2005 median household incomes for all three boroughs – Brooklyn (#14), Queens (#28) and Manhattan (#31) – decreased by 10%, 20% or more while median house prices increased by over 100%. This indicates that not only has joblessness increased within these boroughs but also housing values have surpassed those associated with higher income levels which may be explained by gentrification processes taking place within these areas aroundyonks

Yonkers, New York is a town in Westchester County, New York, United States. The population was 25,873 at the 2010 census and it is the smallest incorporated town in the United States. Yonkers was first settled by Dutch colonists in 1614. It became an act of Congress on July 4, 1785 to decide that NY would be divided into two parts - Upper and Lower Manhattan - for this reason only Monmouth County can lay claim to part of Upper Manhattan which includes Yonkers. The Town of Yonkers was created from a section of the Village of East Redding on March 12, 1836 pursuant to an act of the New York State Legislature. On December 14th, 1846 the name "Yonkers" was changed from "East Redding" to "Yonkers". The town's first store opened on May 1st, 1847. On July 4th 1785 – less than one day after America independence – President George Washington signed a bill creating Upper and Lower Manhattan as separate municipalities for fire protection and other reasons only Monmouth County could lay claim to (the tiny slice extending into what is now Westchester County). This event immortalized Yonkers as being among those towns who submitted during the transfer process but did not receive full citizenship until later when all other communities within NYC were granted their own municipal formulae including Yonker’s incorporation on November 2nd 1850 underAct No 8591 known as “An Act for increasing Municipal Strength in Our City of New York” This new formularization included provisions for a local government including taxation rights with respect both taxes levied by individual townspeople and also assessment rates levied against Township landholdings amounting to $1 per acre assessed against each male settler owning or leasing patentee or overseer grazing or driving cattle upon such Township lands subjection thereto having been paid prior thereto; however these benefits were forfeited when township boundaries were redrawn subsequent to statehood thereby making it difficult if not impossible for any municipality ever again TO enjoy these benefits……………………………………………………………..
