Yonkers is a town in Westchester County, New York, United States. The population was 10,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New York City metropolitan area. Yonkers is one of the oldest towns in upstate New York and has been inhabited by Native Americans for centuries. The first European to visit Yonkers was surveyor George Washington on July 4, 1764. The town's name originated from an Indian word meaning "acre" or "tract." The Erie Canal brought new settlers to Yonkers beginning in 1825 and it became a small village called North End before becoming Yonkers proper on November 1, 1827. On October 14, 1866, the Town of Yonkers merged with the Village of East Hampton to form what is now known as Downtown Yonkers. During World War II, many factories were set up in and around downtown Yonkers due to its proximity to Manhattan and its ability to ship goods quickly over the canal system. In 1945, during World War II,[1] Nazi Germany destroyed all traces of evidence inside and outside of Southport Hall which had been used as a concentration camp by the allies during World War II.[2] Today Southport Hall remains standing as a museum dedicated to that period in history.
The town of Yonkers, New York was founded in 1713 by Nicholas-Jacques Conte and his wife Hanna. The first settler in the area was Nicholas de Longueville, who came to the area in 1686. The land that now makes up Yonkers was originally part of a larger tract that included present-day Rochester and Syracuse. The first town meeting took place on October 4, 1713, and named it after Nicholas-Jacques Conte. In 1785, the towns of Rochesterville and White Plains were merged into Yonkers as well. In 1814, another merger occurred when Brookhaven was combined with Albany. These mergers left Yonkers with a total population of around 362 people. Yonkers experienced some growth during its early years, but it declined in the late 1800s due to factors such as poverty and lack of jobs opportunities. This decline led to a large increase in crime rates in the town starting around 1900. Additionally, heavy industry began moving into the area beginning around this time which caused environmental problems for the townscape. By 1910, there were only about 60 residents living in Yonkers proper; however, this number had grown to over 1,000 by 1930 due to suburban development within walking distance of the city center. During World War II, many civilians were evacuated from Yonkers because of bombing raids conducted by American forces nearby. Many businesses and homes were destroyed or damage beyond repair resulting in an increase in crime rates within the town after hostilities ended; however,. these problems eventually decreased following assimilation into New York City following victory over Nazi Germany
