Yonkers is a small town in the Finger Lakes region of New York, United States. The population was 16,365 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Yonkers- farms area and borders with Syracuse to the north, Oneonta to the east, and Westchester County to the south. Yonkers was founded by Dutch colonists in 1614 as a trading post on an island in what is now Lake Ontario. The name comes from one of two words meaning "seashore." The first English settlers arrived in 1764 and named it after their leader Sir George Washington's home town of York (now Toronto). In 1814, when Albany became the capital of New York state, Yonkers became its seat and remained so until 1800. Its status as a village changed with incorporation into larger towns such as Syracuse and Oneonta. After several fires destroyed most of downtown Yonkers in 1847, efforts were made to rebuild using classical styles including Gothic architecture which won out over popular American Renaissance style designs. During World War II, many residents served in uniform; some are buried at nearby Mount Hope Cemetery. Afterward, Yonkers underwent rapid growth as an industrial center due to technological advances such as mass production methods for plastics ( Wonthofen plant) and auto parts (Eaton Motors plant), which led to increased employment opportunities for local children who had worked in factories throughout the postwar period. Today much of this manufacturing activity has fallen victim to economic downturns across New York City; however, it continues operation at various plants throughout central New York State under new ownership or through spinoffs from other businesses that still use traditional manufacturing processes
