The Yonkers, New York Army National Guard was founded on December 15, 1916. The first unit to be activated in the city was Company C of the 119th Infantry Regiment. The organization grew rapidly and within a year, Company C had become part of the 114th Infantry Regiment. On January 1, 1917, the regiment was redesignated as Company H of the 116th Infantry Regiment and embarked for France on February 5. There they served with distinction until September 1918 when they returned home and were disbanded on October 15. In 1920, an act was passed which authorized the creation of a military school in Yonkers under the jurisdiction of the adjutant general’s office. This school would eventually become known as West Point Military Academy and serve as one of America’s most prestigious military academies until it closed its doors in 1949. During World War II there were numerous changes to army gift history in Yonkers. First there was an increase in enlistment numbers due to World War I and then during World War II there was an increase in troop strength due to both wars. Ultimately however, warfare ceased to play a significant role in army gift history here at West Point Military Academy which became more focused on education opportunities for its students. In 1946-47 alone there were over 1,000 graduates from West Point who enlisted or applied for service in World War II; this is an astounding number considering that only 10% actually served abroad (emphasis added). The Yonkers army gift history can be traced back to the Revolutionary War. General George Washington and his troops were headquartered in Yonkers, New York during the war. However, its legacy continues today as one of the oldest volunteer organizations in New York City.
