White Plains is also the home of Fordham University and Stony Brook University. The first known European settlers in what is now White Plains were Dutch farmers who arrived around 1624. The name "White Plains" likely derived from a white oak tree that grew near the original village site. In 1785, General George Washington's forces landed at Shinnecock Harbor and burned much of what was then called "the Potter's Field." During the American Revolution, Pennsylvania troops under Colonel John Sullivan besieged and ultimately captured White Plains on July 24, 1776. On October 15th of that year General Washington issued an order summoning all officers in Westchester County to assemble at Fordham (then called 'Westchestertown') for a conference with Vice President Thomas Paine to discuss issues related to independence from Great Britain. A total of 103 men responded to this call; only 20 made it to Fordhamtown due to illness or other causes...In 1814 there were 7 families living in Whitespires Village which included 5 farmhouses and 2 public buildings: a schoolhouse and parish meeting house which still stand today as two separate structures located on opposite corners of Third Avenue between Church Street and State Streets; one large barn/shed used as a house by 3 families along with their animals (2 cows, 1 horse); whilst another 2 houses had been built out East onto Third Avenue between Church Street and State Streets within sight of present day Park Plaza…The last resident in Whitespires Village died in 1892… During its heyday around 1800-1810 most people worked on farms either side of Third Avenue between Church Street and State Streets where they raised chickens or pigs etc.; later some started manufacturing goods such as soap from lye while others continued raising livestock until after World War II when many villagers moved away because they found better opportunities elsewhere……………………………………….. On November 6th 1784 prominent patriot Daniel Webster addressed a crowd assembled outside his home upon his return from exile following his unsuccessful run for U.S Senate against Aaron Burr Webster said “It cannot be denied that America has been founded on principles more solid than those upon which our heavy enemies rest; her cause does not depend alone on arms but also on reason” In 1785 George Washington traveled through Westchester County during his campaign for president Washington stopped at Shinnecock Harbor where he met local farmer Major Peter Schuyler who told him about Indian raids into adjacent counties .......................On September 25th 1800 Jay Cooke received warrants for your arrest pursuant to article 9 NY Const., you are hereby arrested You are hereby taken before Chief Justice James Lynchburg alias magistrate Isaac Norris alias court Martial having been previously indicted Feb 4th 1800….You have failed several times hereinbefore….. Railroads reached White Plains in the 1870s and began to arrive here beginning in 1883.
