White Plains is a town in Westchester County, New York, United States. The population was 144,362 at the 2010 census. White Plains is part of the New York City Metropolitan Area and is located on the eastern border of the city of New York City. The first Europeans to visit what is now White Plains were Dutch colonists who landed in 1624. The area was first called "Wappingers Falls" because of a waterfall that flowed from Wappingers Creek near where the village now stands. In 1795, purchase land was made by British settlers for £10 per acre from the Native Americans whose territory lay along both sides of Harlem River. The town's name originated with Captain John Platt's survey of this area which named it "White Plains". In 1814, during the Second Barbary War, American forces burned down several villages in what are now Westchester County as part of Operation Neptune's Spear. One such village was White Plains and it became an important stopover for traders travelling between Albany and Tunis before reaching their final destination in North America. Between 1834 and 1860, many industries developed around White Plains including milling flour, wagonbuilding, tanning hides and producing soap using lime juice as the chief lye agent. Many wealthy white men bought homes here starting in the late 1830s until World War I when prices began to decline due to increased production elsewhere inWestchester County then nationwide during World War II as demand for munitions skyrocketed following America's entry into World War II Elected officials at various levels have been headquartered or registered here since its incorporation as a town in 1898; these include: Mayor Abel Pinchot (1901-1903), Superintendent Charles Wickersham (1896-1900), Acting Sheriff James Fenton (1898-1900), Justice Averill Harriman (1905-1909), Fire Chief George Harker (1920-1922) and District Attorney William Minton (1945-1948).
