White Plains, New York is a small town in western New York state. The population was 23,814 at the 2010 census. It is the largest town in Westchester County. The name "White Plains" comes from English settlers who named it after white flour that they found near the village of White Sands on Long Island Sound. The area now known as White Plains was first settled by Native Americans in the 17th century. In 1686, Sir George Clinton founded what is now called Clinton University in White Plains. The town became a commercial center during the early 19th century with development of mills and factories along the Mohawk River. At its peak, White Plains had a population of over 60,000 people and was considered one of the most important cities in upstate New York. However, during World War II, much of White Plains were destroyed by bombing raids from American bombers and artillery shells from Japanese troops stationed on Long Island Sound. White Plains is a town in Westchester County, New York, United States. The population was 8,752 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous municipality in Westchester County and one of the five towns in the county. At its peak in 1869 it had a population of over 12,000 people. The first Europeans to visit White Plains were French missionaries who came here in 1624 to preach Christianity to Native Americans. They built a small chapel on what is now Washington Street and named it after their leader, Marquette. In 1785, Dutch traders from Albany arrived at White Plains with goods they had acquired from trading posts along the Mohawk River. They founded a small village near present-day Bushwick and called it Fort Orange because of the orange tree that stood there for years before being moved to Harlem (now Manhattan). The Dutch also built an extensive network of canals through this area which helped develop agriculture and trade hereabouts. In 1819, when New York became a state, White Plains was incorporated as part of Ahmadabad Village under the jurisdiction of Westchester County. It remained an agricultural community until about 1870 when manufacturing began to take off here due to advances made in railroads and other technologies. By then most of the farmland had been abandoned or converted into housing developments such as Valhalla & Hudson Place which stands today on what was once called South Ferry Road across from Valhalla High School
