White Plains is a town in Westchester County, New York, United States. The population was 31,869 at the 2010 census. The name was given to the community by Colonel John Lancaster in 1784. White Plains is located on the border of both Westchester and Saratoga counties. The first Europeans to enter what is now White Plains were Frenchmen who came through this area in 1624 as part of an expedition led by Jesuit missionaries François de Laval and René-Robert Cavelier. In 1664, Samuel Osgood founded a trading post at White Plains Junction (now called Osgoodville) after reaching the area from Watertown through the Great Lakes region on his journey from Boston to New York City. In 1784, Colonel John Lancaster renamed the community for himself after he had purchased land here from Daniel Webster's father-in-law Joshua Bartlett. In 1802, white settlers arrived from Rhode Island and began building homes around what is now central White Plains. By 1830, there were over 300 residents of White Plains living in small towns along Route 9A north of where it meets Route 103 today. By 1840, most residents had moved out of town because of new agricultural developments across the road in Putnam County or into other more rural areas within Westchester County due to advances in transportation that made it easier to get goods and people to marketplaces elsewhere than via horseback or wagon travel. During World War II, many factories and military housing units were built near central White Plains by defense contractor Wernher von Braun while other companies such as Bethlehem Steel produced munitions nearby at Beechcroft Arsenal on Long Island Sound Naval Station just south of town on Governors Point Peninsula. Afterward Central Park served as a popular recreational center with open fields for sports including football and basketball games until development around it began during the 1960s when apartments became available for purchase near its eastern edge starting with Mohawk Place followed by larger buildings like Regency Towers which latter still stands today overlooking Central Park following multiple expansions throughout recent years including renovation/updates announced recently during a dedication event attended by Mayor Lovely Warren with Governor Andrew Cuomo less than one mile away

White Plains is a town in Westchester County, New York, United States. The population was 24,541 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Westchester County. White Plains was founded in 1785 by George Clinton and his brother-in-law Nicholas Roosevelt as part of a larger area that became known as the "Capital District". The town's first store was built on what is now Route 4A. In 1813, White Plains became the capital of New York State following its purchase from Albany by Governor John Jay. The state legislature moved to Albany in 1814 and White Plains remained the capital until 1824 when it returned to New York City. In 1830, White Plains became a city and was renamed for its founder, George Clinton. The main banking industry in White Plains until the 1970s centered around insurance companies such as American National (later American International), Travelers Insurance Company (now Allstate), Standard Life Assurance Company (now Hartford) and Lehigh Valley Banking Corporation (now First Niagara). Many of these companies remain active today but have smaller footprints thanks to consolidation within their industries over time. Other large employers during this time include RadioShack Corporation (), Eli Lilly and Co., Ford Motor Company (), Chase Manhattan Bank (), Wachovia Corporation () and Prudential Financial (). In 1976, Alfred Pritchard opened Pritchard's Supermarket which remains one of the anchors of downtown White Plains today
