Westbury is a small town in upstate New York, located on the west side of the Adirondacks. It was first settled by Dutch colonists in 1624 and remained part of that country until 1784. In 1813, it became part of the newly formed United States of America, and has since been an important community within its borders. The town was founded on a site that had been occupied for hundreds of years by two large buffalo herds. The first people to live here were the Mohawks, who arrived in 1624 from Canada. They built their wigwams near what is now Westbury Lake. The first settlers were hardworking farmers who grew crops and raised livestock. For many years, Westbury remained isolated from other communities in upstate New York; however, this changed with the construction of the Erie Canal in 1825-26. This long canal allowed for easy trade between Buffalo and Albany, and also made Westbury accessible to larger numbers of people. As more people moved into Westbury during the 19th century, they began to change its character considerably. A number of these newcomers bought land around what is now downtown; these gentlemen farmers laid out roads and built houses which remain extant today as some of the most impressive examples of 19th century architecture in Upstate New York. Many businesses owner early 20th century also started developing new neighborhoods such as Jericho Hill (to the east), Lakeside (to the south), and North Royalton (to the north). During World War II, much work took place at nearby Peekskill Arsenal; workers there produced materials used in naval ships build during World War II including USS Constitution (CV-4) and USS Enterprise (CV-6). After V-E Day1945 those plants closed down but portions are still open for business today like Alcoa aluminum plant which produces batteries for automobiles etc., Eastman Kodak plant which produces film etc., Whitney Museum Of American Art located just across Route 9A from town limits producing art objects & photographs etc.; all these plants operated during WW2 too
Westbury was first settled in 1777 by colonists from Rhode Island. It became a town in 1812 and was named for the westernmost point of Long Island. The town was incorporated as a village in 1834, and it became an city in 1898.
