In the early 1800s, there were no gun shops in West Haverstraw. Gunsmiths had to be found elsewhere because rifles and pistols were only available to wealthy men and women. However, over time some of the town's residents became interested in firearms and started setting up their own businesses dealing in weapons, ammunition, and other shooting supplies. One of these business owners was Isaac Smeaton who set up an entire shop on Main Street in 1834. He did this because he wanted to provide his customers with the best quality firearms at the most reasonable prices. Smeaton's Shop is still operational today and offers a wide range of shooting supplies, including handguns, shotguns, rifles, ammo, and more.

It is part of the Buffalo-Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was named for Captain John Haverstraw and his family who settled there in 1795. The first post office opened in 1801. West Haverstraw has had a general store since 1819 and also a blacksmith shop from 1827 to 1840. A sawmill operated from 1847 to 1870; it was shut down by the Panic of 1907 due to economic difficulties. In 1912, the town built its first school which still operates today as West Haverstraw Elementary School. In 1916, the Westinghouse Electric Company constructed its first power plant in Western New York; it remained operational until 1978 when it was decommissioned and replaced by an PSEG facility east of Niagara Falls that became operational in 1982. According to the 2000 census, there were 1,746 people living in zip code 142605 excluding those living within call letters WGRK or WENS which are part of Erie area code 814; 2% lived within city limits and 98% resided within rural areas

West Haverstraw is a town in Monroe County, New York, United States. The population was 3,898 at the 2010 census. West Haverstraw is one of the oldest towns in New York and has been settled since 1664. The first settler in what is now West Haverstraw was Nicholas Deering.
West Haverstraw, New York is a town in Sullivan County, New York, United States. The population was 1,969 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest of the seven towns in Sullivan County. The first European settlers in what is now West Haverstraw were Dutch farmers who arrived in 1624 and named it "Wouterstadt" (later "West Hookerstown"). In 1772, the proprietors of a gristmill on the south side of Cayuga Lake began to grow barley and wheat and name their new community after Jameson Livingston, 3rd Baron Dunmore. The current name originated with Revolutionary War General John Stark's order that all local names be changed from Dunmore to Haverstraw in honor of his father-in-law Sir George Washington. In 1814, when the township was formed from parts of two other townships (East Haverstraw and Clinton), its only settler was James Fenton. When Haverstraw became an incorporated village on April 14, 1912 (from part of Clinton), it had a population of just over 100 people; today it has a population of under 1,000 people due to suburbanization. The original west side home farmsteads still stand near where Route 9 intersects Route 4 at East Village Road; they are open to visitors during regular business hours as part of the Town Historical Site tour program run by the town government office. A cemetery opened there in 1935 for those killed or buried in World War I and II adjoining land bought by Westchester County for use as military labor camp interment sites; all but one site have been removed since then. The Evergreen Elementary School building donated by Mrs. JF Stevens is also open for tours daily 10am-3pm except Mondays when school is closed because state exams are being given at that time inside her house!
