There were no schools or churches in what became West Haverstraw until 1828, when a post office called East Haverstraw was established. For some time, it served as both townships' seat with separate governments; however, this arrangement ended with unification under one government in 1858. In 1824, John Morse moved to what would become West Haverstraw from Schenectady and began trading goods along the creek forNative Americans who lived on Long Lake and other areas within today's Mohawk County. West Haverstraw was first settled in 1805 by Nicholas Easton and his wife Sarah. In 1827, Jacob Brown patented the land that includes present-day West Haverstraw from Nicholas Easton. The village was laid out in 1836 by Ebenezer Greene and others under the direction of Major General John Greenleaf Whipple. A post office called "Westerstown" opened in 1837 and remained in operation until 1903. The Village of West Haverstraw has two schools: one public and one private. There are also three churches in West Haverstraw: First Presbyterian (1835), Second Baptist (1849), and Third Methodist (1901). According to the 2010 census, there are also six businesses in town including three restaurants, four grocery stores, two gas stations/convenience stores, two pawn shops/merchants store, one salon/barber shop, and one hardware store.
