In 1627, he founded what is now Haverstraw Academy and helped to found other towns and villages along the Hudson River such as Schenectady, Albany and Plattsburgh. During World War II, many residents of West Haverstraw left to fight in Europe because of rationing restrictions placed on America by the war effort. West Haverstraw is a small town in upstate New York, located on the outskirts of Albany. The population was 4,036 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Utica-Rome-White Plains, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Haverstraw" was derived from an early Dutch settlement called "Heerstedt". The first inhabitants of what is now West Haverstraw were farmers and their families who arrived around 1642. They built a small village on the site that still stands today. In 1747, John Slocum took over ownership of the village from his father and began to improve it. He named it after his friend and neighbor, James Haverstock (1692-1772). In 1802, General George Washington and his army passed through West Haverstraw on their way to battle with Spain in Havana Bay. The town quickly became known as "the Gateway to Buffalo". By 1825, about 60% of all produce grown in Upstate New York came from West Haverstryw Produce Market which operated until 1865 when it closed due to competition from larger markets in Troy and Syracuse. During this time also much development took place in the area including two schools, one for boys and one for girls; several churches; a sawmill; three stores; a blacksmith shop; three residences (four if you count George Bogan's house which burned down in 1879); four schoolhouses - all private schools until 1904 when they were consolidated into one public school building - thirteen farms - many with slaves ; six log cabins used by farmers as homes during the agricultural depression of the 1830s; five miles of good paved roads completed between 1825 and 1840 following surveys done by Captain Augustus DeKay while he served as surveyor for Surrogates District No. 3 encompassing southwestern Clinton County.; extensive remains of buildings including some original structures are extant today outside town limits within boundaries set off by modern fences

West Haverstraw is a town in Greene County, New York, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. The first settler in West Haverstraw was Obadiah Smith in 1784. In 1814, it became part of Greene County and then Rockland County. On March 15, 1827, it became part of the new Town of West Haverstraw and remained so until January 13th, 1898 when it reverted to Greene County status. The town lies on the eastern shore of Stockbridge Creek which forms the border between Greene and Orange counties. It is bordered by the towns of Brockport to the north-west and Hamburg to the south-east. To its west are the hamlets of Easton and Bolton Landing while to its east are Greenville Manor and Sleepy Hollow Park. There are several small streams that run through or near West Haverstraw including Elmira Stream (or Elmira Pond), Fish Brook (or Fish Pond), Little Stockbridge Creek (or Meadowbrook Creek) as well as several large ponds such as Black Hawk Pond/Pond No., White Eagle Pond (or Moon Lake), Alleghanie pond (Alleghanie Brook) as well asStockbridge creek's many tributaries which include Angelica brook (/Angelica stream), Aspinwall brook (/Aspinwall stream/; Aspinwall Falls), Balthazar brook (/Balthazar stream/; Balthazar Mill), Baldwins Kill /Pond No./; Bedford Kill /Pond No./; Bedgoods Kill /ponds N/A/, Biggleskill Falls /Aspinwall Fall/, Blind Brook (/Blind brooks N/A/) - stocks for hatchery purposes only-. According to The Gazetteer Of Greene County: "In 1784 Obadiah Smith settled upon a farm now known as Browning's Hill, about twenty rods from where he left his rice crop behind him." This initial settling activity took place aroundpictured here - just east of present day State Highway 12 southbound exit off US 1 in what is today called Watertown - an area that would eventually become part of North Haverston Township but within Roehampton township at that time). soon other settlers began moving into this area also some coming downriver from Connecticut via Newtown CT crossing over Stockbridge creek on small boats... Obadiah's wife Jemima came with them along with their five children who were all born in this area between 1786-1793... they first built a log cabin on Browning's Hill which still stands today adjacent to Main Street". At this time 2 major roads connected Greensboro NY with Yonkers NY - one going north & connecting Hyde Park NY via Muskegon Heights PA (& Morningside Heights IL)...the other going south & running parallel to Route 9 thru WEST HAVERSTRAW thence via Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute northeastward following Mohawk River valley (& Troy NJ) arriving at Saratoga Springs NY"...this road remains extant today as US 9 Alternate aka Sunrise Highway - one mile longprogressing easterly from HD12 junction just past WHTF shopping center then turning sharply NE towards Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute before terminating at HD12 junction again becoming Sunrise Highway

The population growth and development of the town came about due to the opening of the Erie Canal in 1825, which made it easier for goods to be traded between New York City and Buffalo. The townsfolk also developed a strong agricultural industry, which helped support their economy. In 1916, West Haverstraw became an incorporated village and continued to grow until it had a population of over 100 residents in 1950.
