West Haverstraw, New York is a town in Lewis County, New York, United States. The population was 1,717 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Syracuse-Athens-New Rochelle Micropolitan Statistical Area. The village of West Haverstraw was first settled in 1785 by Nicholas Withers and his wife Margaret Willard and their four children. The village became a town on February 24, 1831. The original courthouse was destroyed by fire in 1867 and replaced with a new one. In 1898, the community had 2 storekeepers and 14 other citizens when it voted to change its name to West Haverstraw because of its proximity to Syracuse. In 2007, changes were made to the zoning code for the town which would allow for more shopping options within walking distance of residents. This allowed Forrester's Department Store to move into what is now the former post office building on Main Street which has been used as an office park since 2006. The current mayor of West Haverstraw is Joseph Aiello who was elected in November 2018 after being reelected as City Councilman for District 11B from 2017-2018
The Coast Guard was founded in 1915 as the United States Coast Guard Reserve. The first type of coast guard vessel, the Cutter, was designed to provide temporary aid to coastal communities during natural disasters. In 1917, the first Coast Guard Station was established at Long Island City, New York. By 1924, all United States Coast Guards stations were manned by a single unit-the cutter patrol boat or CGC. In 1933, the Coast Guard decided that a regular shore duty would be better for its men and began providing an on-duty service from merchant ships in addition to their usual duties ashore. This new concept became known as “ Deckhands” Service and lasted until 1942 when it was discontinued due to World War II. Since its inception as a coast guard service, the Coast Guard has played an important role in both world wars and throughout our history. Through many sacrifices made by its members- including lost lives on both coasts-the Coast Guards have preserved our nation’s maritime environment and economy while also fulfilling their sworn mission of protecting life and property on our waters.

West Haverstraw is a small town in Sullivan County, New York, United States. The population was 1,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Buffalo-Niagara Falls metropolitan area. West Haverstraw has been inhabited by the Mohawk people since 1614. In 1812, it was made a village by act of the New York State Legislature; but in 1826 it became a town under an act of the New York state legislature. The townsite was laid out on July 4, 1827, by James Webb and others under the direction of Colonel John Dutchman. The first settler in what is now West Haverstraw was Levi Coffin; he arrived in 1794 and built a cabin near what is now its center.

The first Europeans to come to what is now West Haverstraw were Dutch traders and settlers who arrived in 1624. In 1627, the English founded a trading post here and by 1639 had also founded a small village called Haverstraw on the west side of present-day West Haverstraw Creek. On July 12, 1647, the Province of New York granted land to John Winthrop for his settlement at Marthas Vineyard on Long Island Sound. The town was named after Winthrop's daughter (Haverstride). In 1764–65, patriot troops from Connecticut under General John Burgoyne moved across the Hudson River into Sullivan County and made an attack against British forces at Saratoga Springs. As part of this campaign, Major General James Wolfe's column burned down much of the villages in Orange County before reaching West Haverston where he finally surrendered on September 17, 1777. After World War II ended in 1945 and many farms became sectionalized due to government policies favoring one race over another during Reconstruction times, West Haverston experienced its most rapid growth between 1949 and 1959 when it reached a peak population of 10,873 according to the 2000 census estimate. HoweverSince then its population has slowly declined (-2% from 2001) as a result of commuting within New York City or other nearby municipalities as well as natural attrition caused by age-related declines among residents
