Watertown was founded in 1795 by John and Susanna Green as a small village on the Mohawk River. It became a town on April 15, 1825, when it merged with the neighboring village of Schenectady to form the new Town of Watertown. The name "Watertown" comes from two local water holes: One near Main Street and one near State Street. The first store in town was established on Broadway between State and Broad Streets in 1826. In 1828, Watertown became part of the newly formed United States after its purchase from Great Britain. The Erie Canal reached Watertown in 1830 and made it an important shipping point for goods arriving from Canada and other parts of the Europe continent. As more people moved into town, businesses grew up around canal transportation including a flour mill built in 1840 by Isaiah Bickford and others; an sawmill built in 1860 by Andrew Carnegie; and a railroad station opened in 1870 which served as the town's main artery until 1984 when Amtrak discontinued service to Watertown because of budget cuts. In 1932-1933, large trees were cut down along Fourth Avenue south of High Street so that monumental Citizens' Plaza could be built adjacent to downtown instead which remains today as one of downtown Watertown's most popular attractions Watertown has always been home to many prominent officials including Ulysses S Grant who lived there for several years before moving northward towards Canton; Salmon Pelly who served as secretary of state under Presidents James K Polk and Franklin D Roosevelt; Edmund Muskie who was elected governor twice but only lasted six months before being impeached; Govind Varma who later became India's first prime minister after leading India through independence process; Paul Noyes who founded Upstate NY Regional Airport Authority (UNA); Mayor Richard Molloy started city hall movement within City Council that eventually led him out front against developers following his election victory four years later
