The New York National Guard was first organized on December 12, 1792 as a regiment of militia to provide security for the town of Watertown. The first commander of the New York National Guard was Colonel James Clinton. The guard has served in various roles throughout its history and currently consists of around 38,000 active members. The Guard's original mission was to protect the town from possible attack by Native Americans, but it soon realized that its role could go further. In 1814, it helped suppress a disturbance in Westchester County and in 1825 responded to a call for help against rioters in Buffalo. Throughout its history, the Guard has been involved in many important events and sacrifices. For example, during World War I, it played an essential role in bringing food supplies to troops stationed abroad and providing protection at home. In 1945, the Guard helped liberate America from Japan following World War II. Despite these years of proud service, there are still some remnants of the Guards' heritage that can be found today. For example, there is still a military unit called "The Old Guard" which is composed entirely of veterans from previous wars who have retired or been discharged from active duty. Additionally, there are also several units that focus on ceremonial duties such as the "Queen's Own Rangers". -In 1912-1913 New York City Mayor William Denny created an organization known as "New York City Protective Association"HPWG (National Museum) - This museum contains relics dating back to 1624 when Dutch traders came ashore with their shipwrecked cargo at Rockaway Beach (then part of Long Island). In order for units formed under this new system to function effectively, it was necessary for them to have both uniformity and equipment compatible with those fielded by other militaries around the country (Gunnerson). This proved difficult given that there were very different strategies being pursued by each side in battle and even within individual regiments/battalions could vary quite substantially depending on location or troop composition (Dunning-Kearney). As a result, not every unit operated according to standard operating procedures until after hostilities ended in 1783 when regulations were developed entitled "Organized Military Forces during peace time" which standardized equipment and uniforms across all regiments/brigades (Merrill). While some regiments did operate under these regulations at times during hostilities, most units remained unaffected until well into1784 when finally laws were passed permitting general arming and funding for national guard organizations effective July 1st (Logan). This change not only helped improve security but also allowed donations and recruiting feverishly among those who wanted nothing more thanto serve their country-now ableto lay down their lives without fear of forfeiture or confiscation (Fletcher)."
