Watertown, New York (population: 38,000) is a town in Saratoga County, New York, United States. The population was estimated at 41,814 as of the 2010 census. Watertown is the largest town in Saratoga County and the second-largest municipality in New York after City of New York. It lies on the east bank of the Hudson River between Albany and Ithaca. The first permanent settlers were Dutch colonists who arrived in 1624 and established a trading post near what is now Watertown. In 1764, General George Washington's army passed through this area during its campaign against the British; during that battle, General Washington's forces destroyed a large British fort at Fort Stanwix located just outside of Watertown. The town was renamed for Lieutenant Colonel John Johnson (1728–1805), one of Washington's aides-de-camp and one of his most trusted lieutenants. Watertown grew rapidly due to its location on the Mohawk River and its access to transportation by water. By 1825, it had become an important commercial center with a canal system connecting it to other parts of New York State and beyond. In 1835, Congress created Saratoga County out of part of Ontario County; Watertown became part of that county. In 1862, when Saratoga Countys territory was enlarged by purchase from Connecticut following their victory at Gettysburg Campaign, Woodstock Township also became a part of Saratoga County as did Cohoes Township which lay immediately southward along Lake Champlain until then part onlyof Hamilton Heights township which adjoined Colchester borough prior tocreationofCohoesuthernumberandLeesvillevillagesin1947).
