Valley Stream Police Department was established in 1892 as the Valley Stream Park police department. In 1899, the department became a full-time law enforcement agency and changed its name to the Valley Stream Patrol. On December 14, 1916, the Valley Stream Patrol was disbanded and its assets were merged with that of the Hempstead Township Police Department. The Valley Stream Patrol reopened on October 1, 1927 as part of a new town police force which was organized from all of the former ValleyStream Parks departments. In 1960, the Valleyspeed patrol unit was disbanded and its assets were combined with those of the Hedgewood Heights Police Department to form the present day Valley Stream Police Department.

Valley Stream is a city in the US state of New York. It is located on the west bank of the Hudson River, about 24 miles (39 km) north of New York City and 16 miles (25 km) east of Albany. The population was 602 at the 2010 census. Valley Stream had been a Dutch settlement from 1624 to 1664, but it was renamed after Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, in 1777 by General George Washington as part of his campaign against British forces. The first white settlers arrived in what is now Valley Stream in 1624. A smallpox epidemic that year killed most of the original families and their animals, so the area became known as "the Plague-Stronghold". In 1777, General George Washington decided to rename the town after his military victory over British forces at Valley Forge in Pennsylvania. The town was formally erected on December 18th, 1777, with streets named for Generals Washington and Sullivan. In 1840s and 1850s many new settlements were founded along the banks of the Hudson River due to increasing trade with New Jersey and Buffalo Bayou (now Buffalo Creek). The steamboats brought passengers and goods downriver to Albany and Yonkers during this time period; valley stream Parkway was built near downtown Albany to commemorate this commercial activity. During World War II many factories were located around downtown Albany including North American Aviation Company (later Lockheed Martin), Bell Helicopter Corporation, United States Rubber Company, Mohawk Products Corporation and other important companies which continue today as Downtown Albany businesses like First Niagara Financial Corp., Schneider Electric & Associates LLP., Coca Cola Refreshment Co., IBM Rochester Laboratories Incorporated & its subsidiaries - all within a few blocks of each other across Main Street between Pearl Street/Broadway Avenue/Washington Boulevard/Vernon Place & State Street/Rochester Avenue
