Valley Stream is a town in Sullivan County, New York, United States. The population was 5,811 at the 2010 census. The town of Valley Stream was first settled in 1792 and became a part of the New York State Capital Region. Valley Stream is located on the south bank of the Hudson River, about 18 miles east of Albany and about 25 miles north-west of Buffalo. The valley around Valle stream formed from melting glaciers over time which created pools, lakes and rivers. By 1800 there were several small villages located near present day Valley Stream: Northvale (now Westchester), Spring Lake, Southdale and White Plains. The name Valley Stream originates from one of these streams that flowed through the town. Another source for this name is likely a Native American term meaning "valley covered with snow" or "valley where water flows easily". In 1802 George Washington visited this area while on his way to visit Albany; he is thought to have named both Valle stream and the village after General Washington himself! In 1825 Major John Jacob Astor founded what would become Oneonta which stood as an early example of commercial enterprise in upstate New York. Thisenterprise led to many other businesses being established throughout what would become Valley Stream including grocery stores, hotels, lumberyards and more. steamboats called at Valle stream frequently during this time for passengers travelling downriver to Buffalo or up river to Saratoga Springs or Niagara Falls! Oneonta was renamed “ValleyStream†by then-Governor Palazzo because it seemed like an appropriate name for a community situated on the south side of the Hudson River between Albany and Rochester – just downstream from Brownville Lock onondaga Creek*. In 1869 when Section 8 (the original Town line) was drawn through Sullivan County lines it followed contemporary trends††preferences for naming towns along rivers rather than straight ahead across open land so sectional boundaries continue to be used today*‡*. It wasn't until 1916 when another major change happened within Valle stream when electric streetlights began appearing throughout town*§*. From then until 2009 all street lights in town were controlled by local township crews who replaced traditional gasoline lamps with LED technology**§*.
