Valley Stream is a small town in upstate New York, about an hour's drive from New York City. It was founded by Dutch farmers in the 17th century and became a military post during the Revolutionary War. Valley Stream has three schools: one public, one private and one for-profit. The town also has a library, a grocery store, two restaurants, two bars and two casinos. The first military post in Valley Stream was Fort George on the Hudson River. It was built by General George Washington to protect against French attacks during the Revolution. Valley Stream became an important military base after the war because it had access to enough water to support artillery and infantry units. The fort was decommissioned in 1814 and its land used for housing until 1984 when it was donated to the town of Valley Stream as part of a park program. Valley Stream became popular with soldiers during World War II because of its access to water supplies and good roads. Valley Stream is a town in Greene County, New York, United States. The population was 3,052 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Syracuse–New Rochelle, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area. Valley Stream is on the border of two states: New York to the north and Pennsylvania to the south. The first settlers in Valley Stream were Germans who came overland from Pomerania in 1784. The town was founded by Nicholas Jordon and his brother-in-law, Abraham van Schaick, on April 12, 1807. The name "Valley Stream" was choice because it stretched from valley to valley and its stream flowed through many valleys. The town began to grow rapidly after it became a village on January 1, 1824 under the terms of an act of Parliament passed that year. On October 15th of that same year (1824), Gov. Nicholas Biddle signed an act giving Valley Stream Municipal status which made it one of sixty towns within New York State with municipal government separate from county government. In 1862 Revolutions began happening throughout America and soon Valley Stream found itself at the center of attention as residents voted for secession from New York City if their demands for more rights were not met such as voting representation in state assemblies and having their own currency system like that used in Pennsylvania during this time period called "silver dollars." When these demands did not meet with success some decided to fight back by seceding into what would become known as The Union Party which later became known as the Republican Party while others stayed within the new municipal government controlled by Valleysmiths until 1870 when they once again withdrew into their own private society separate from other villages within Greene County when county boundaries were redrawn following American Civil War fortunes). Valley Stream is a town in Otsego County, New York, United States. The population was 5,822 at the 2010 census. Valley Stream is one of three towns in Otsego County and the only one located on the southern side of the Mohawk River. The first settler in Valley Stream was Nicholas Decker who arrived in 1776 from Connecticut. He built a cabin on what is now Third Street. The first post office was established in 1811 and was called "Beacon". In 1837, the name of the town changed to "Valley Stream" after its location on Valley Creek near present-day Second Avenue and Broadway streets. In 1881, an act to establish schools within Otsego County was passed by the New York State Assembly and signed by Governor James Ketchum. The school district that would later include Valley Stream opened for instruction on October 1, 1881 with fifteen students. This establishment of public education within Otsego County helped spur development around Valley Stream as well as new businesses and homes being erected along Broadway Street and other valley streets during this time period. Since its inception as a village in 1861 it has grown steadily with an estimated population growth rate of over 20% each decade until reaching 5,822 residents at the 2010 census
