Valley Stream is a town in Ulster County, New York, United States. The population was 8,814 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Ulster County. Valley Stream is situated on the Mohawk River and includes the towns of Easton and Southwick. The valley formed by the creek that flows through it has been used for farming and grazing since pre-historic times. In 1795, when English General John Burgoyne surrendered at Saratoga, his army camped near present-day Valley Stream. Valley Stream was first settled in 1798 by immigrants from Germany who were looking for land to farm after their country was divided between Great Britain and France during the French Revolution. At its peak in 1820, Valley Stream had a population of 30 families. In 1827, when Erie Canal began construction through central New York, farmers turned to irrigation to improve their crops and increase production; this led to increased demand for water on the canal which also helped spur development around Vallestream village. The town's centennial year was celebrated in 1897 with a fairgrounds/park complex (now known as Park Meadows) being built alongMohawk River Boulevard southwest of town center; other festivities included an agricultural show and dance on October 15th that attracted more than 25,000 people from all over northeastern New York The original name of Vallestream Village (now Park Meadows) was "Erie". When Vallestream became part of Ulster County in 1898 it changed its name again to "Valley Stream". It is interesting to note that many places with nicknames - like Peekskill Junction or Scranton - were actually incorporated villages until they lost their taxing power after annexation into larger municipalities such as Scranton or Wilkes-Barre. On July 1st 1860 Uniontown Consolidated Landowners bought out all but one settler from James Cavanaugh who had sold 612 acres (247 hectares) adjacent to what is now Town Hall Square within minutes of each other (). Valley Stream, New York is a small town in upstate New York. It was founded in 1765 by colonists from Ulster County, Ireland and it has been the county seat of Sullivan County since 1824. The population was 9,827 at the 2010 census. Valley Stream is located on the south bank of the Addison River, about 20 miles east of Buffalo and 40 miles west of Rochester. The town was named for streams that flowed through it—Valley Stream on the east side and Addison Creek on the west side. The first settler in Valley Stream was Jonas Valerius, who arrived in 1765. He built a log cabin on what is now Main Street. other early settlers were John Doherty and Michael Hogan. By 1800, there were more than 100 people living in Valley Stream. In 1824, Sullivan County was created from portions of Erie and Ontario counties and Valley Stream became its county seat. In 1832, parts of Niagara County were added to Sullivan County, making it even larger than before. The population continued to grow throughout this time; by 1840, it had reached 1,200 people! In 1847–48, an Act to improve access to education withinSullivanCountywas passed; as a result, ValleyStreambecamethe first incorporated city in New York state!
