Valley Stream, New York is home to the United States Army's 3rd Infantry Division. The division was first activated in 1917 and has fought in some of the bloodiest battles of World War I and World War II. Today, the division maneuvers near Ticonderoga and Fort Drum in upstate New York. In addition to its active duty, the division also deploys for various operations in Europe, Asia Pacific, Africa and South America. The Valley Stream Armory was the first of what would become an army deployed gift history in Valley Stream, New York. It was founded on December 3, 1814 by Captain Nathan Hale and his team of mechanics and wagonmakers. Valley Stream is a town in Ulster County, New York, United States. The population was 9,824 at the 2010 census. Valley Stream is part of the Buffalo–Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Town of Valley Stream was formed in 1824 when parts of the now-defunct village of Killenville were annexed by Valley Stream. In 1866, the town developed a canal system to bring water from upstate New York into town from the Mohawk River valley. The canals helped to revive the local economy and brought many new residents and businesses to Valley Stream over time. The first post office at Valley Stream opened in 1827; it was renamed Killenville in 1865 after John A. Killen, who had donated land for the town’s development. The original name may have been chosen because of concerns about potential flooding during heavy rains due to nearby tributaries such as Niagara River. Today, most people in Valle stream call themselves "Valley streamers" or simply " locals". In 1792, two brothers named George and Jonathan Vallee bought 500 acres (2 km²) along present-day Main Street in what is now Township 5K (northwest corner of Ulster and Washington Counties).
