The Utica Naval Shipyard built a number of navy ships between 1887 and 1912. The most famous of these vessels was the USS Constitution, which served in the American Revolution and the Civil War.
Utica is a town in New York County, on the east bank of the Hudson River. The population was 41,902 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Utica-Rome-Newburgh Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1785 by colonists from Ulster and Connaught who had arrived by way of New York City. It became a full municipality in 1836 and it has since been variously called "the old capital" or "the cultural center of Finger Lakes." In 1614, when settlers first landed on Long Island, they named their new place after the Roman city Utica because its governor, Lucius Caesar Vespasianus, had helped them gain entrance to what was then Dutch America (now New Netherland). The name stuck and Utica became one of the most important settlements on Long Island. In 1785, when Congress annexed areas west of Queensboro Heights to form Brooklyn, Utica remained an independent town within that new borough. In 1836, however, Utica became part of newly formed Rome Township within Rome Borough which also included much larger village such as Oneonta and Verona. As Rome Township turned into a borough in 1897 it lost its autonomy again but regained it in 1915 when Rome Township merged with other nearby townships to form Rome-on-Hudson Borough. In 2003 Rome-on-Hudson Borough merged with Greenburgh Borough to become Utica Municipal Corporation which still governs all aspects of life within our community including education, economic development and infrastructure renewal projects across many municipalities throughoutNYC! utICA's rich history begins with our founding fathers who chose this location for two reasons: as a key interchange point between different British colonies on Long Island Sound – both those northward from Manhattan via Kingston (then Nassau) Bay and those southward through Connecticut –Jews fleeing persecution in Europe were able to disembark here en masse during the Revolutionary War; and as home to one of America’s leading portrait galleries thanks to Augustus Saint Gaudens’s move from his house on Orchard Street two miles away in 1847 (and his subsequent purchase by George Washington). Utica was a small town in upstate New York, located on the Mohawk River. Utica was first settled by Dutch colonists in 1624 and became a part of the Province of New York in 1686. The town was moved to its present location in 1792 when the river was widened and flood plains were created. Utica grew rapidly during the late 1800s and early 1900s as a result of its natural resources, including lumber, coal, and iron ore. In 1916, Utica became an incorporated city and continues to grow today as a bedroom community for larger cities such as Buffalo and Syracuse. The history of Utica can be traced back to the early 1600s when some Dutch settlers traveled downriver from what is now Albany County to find land suitable for farming. By 1624, there were about 400 people living inUtica. Over time, however, Utica grew more important due to its strategic location on the Mohawk River between Albany and Rochester. In 1792, after New York State gained independence from England, Utica became a part of the new state. This move increased trade between Utica and other parts of New York City while creating new opportunities for businesses such as lumberjacks, miners, farmers, prostitutes, etc. In 1916-17 assistant city manager John Jansen developed plans for utICA which would later become reality when utICA incorporation took place that same year villager Walter Hickey served as mayor from 1917-1920; he also helped develop plans for annexing neighboring towns intoUtICA over time The post office opened in 1836 but closed in 1849 because it could not keep up with population growth . In 1857-1858 two railroad lines came through town giving residents access to jobs outside their homes . The mills closed around 1880 due to competition from new technology . However , even though many mills closed during this period ,Utika's unique Gilbertite architecture still remains visible throughout many neighborhoods today
Utica was founded by the Dutch in 1624 as a trading post on the Utica River. It became an American town in 1776 and was named for Utica, New York, the capital of the Province of New York. The town was destroyed by a fire in 1814 and again by a fire in 1825. In 1847, it became a city and remained so until 1907.
