In Utica, New York, the Marine Corps has been deploying gifts to Marines for many years. The tradition of sending gifts back to Marines began in the early 1960s when the Utica Command received a gift from then-Marine Brigadier General Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin. Aldrin donated a beautiful set of presidential inauguration speakers from his time as Director of Audio and Video at Headquarters Marine Corps Base Quantico, Virginia. The speaker set was given to Utica Command by then-Lt. Colonel Edwin Vaught, who served as commanding officer at Quantico during the inauguration. Since its inception, the Marine gift history has been very special in that it typically signifies good will and support between Marines and their families living ashore or visiting installations around the world. Many times, Naval Station Norfolk or Camp Pendleton have hosted events where Marines can come together and exchange Christmas presents with their families while away on deployment. In addition to giving these amazing gifts, marines also often help out local communities through deployments with visits to schools and hospitals. TheUticaCommand's longstanding tradition of sending presented Gifts Back home continues today as part of our annual send-back campaign which begins on December 15th each year and runs until January 5th! Utica is a town in the U.S. state of New York, located on the Mohawk River. As of the 2010 census, the population was 17,451. It is part of the Utica-Rome, NY–NY Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Utica" is from Algonquian word meaning "to place where there are grapes." The original settlement was called by this name in 1624 when it was founded by Sir George Clinton and Sir James Smith on opposite banks of the Mohawk River. In 1814, during the War of 1812, General John Armstrong's brigade under General Dearborn crossed overland from Canada to invade and take Utica without fighting. The town acquired its present name on September 15, 1814 when it was moved from Rome (then called Mohawk) to its present location following a battle between American and British forces near that village which resulted in a United States victory. At first nothing grew here except cornmeal; later potatoes were planted and hay was raised for animal feed but all these activities failed because no water could be found to irrigate them properly. A small mill known as Cornish Mills had been built about 1800 on an opening in what is now Canal Street but it went out of business after just a few years due to lack of demand from local farmers for flour made from maize flour obtained from imported goods brought over by ships docking at Genesee Bay or Niagara Falls sometimes carrying 500 sacks per voyage! By 1825Utica boasted three public buildings: one school house (now First Congregational Church), one storehouse (now Pittsford Museum), and two churches—one Greek Orthodox (founded 1830) and one Protestant (founded 1836). One hundred families removed to Seneca Lake after the Erie Canal opened in 1850 offered assistance with getting land grant certificates for their townships which they then developed into villages such as Canandaigua, Rochester, Auburn Hills and Norwich while most remaining settlers gradually abandoned their homes around 1870 due primarily to technological advances which made life much easier including railroads making freight shipping much cheaper than sailing ship trips across open ocean routes In 1840 more than 20% of both male residents aged 25 or older in Utica were self-employed professionals; this percentage increased rapidly until 1880 when it peaked at almost 50%. After that point there gradually declined until 1990 when self-employment decreased again although still above 40%. nevertheless employment levels have since leveled off Employment opportunities outside professional fields include many blue collar jobs including manufacturing/processing/office work etc., however these roles tend not to offer good wage rates nor fringe benefits compared with professional jobs There are also numerous small businesses throughout town providing services such as beauty salons/, petitting houses/ lodges/, catering services/, real estate agents/ brokers etc., however none provide sustained growth or high hourly wages like professional businesses do
The Marine Corps has a rich and colorful history that can be traced back to the Revolutionary War. The Marines were first organized on November 10, 1775, when 23 enlisted men of privateer Captain John Paul Jones's squadron deserted their ship, the Prince of Wales, in order to join the Continental Navy. The Marine Corps was founded as an infantry regiment on April 20, 1780. It was redesignated as a marines battalion on October 1, 1802. On July 30th 1907 Headquarters and Headquarters Company (HHHC) Companies A-G were transferred from Quantico Naval Base, VA to Camp Pendleton CA and became part of III Marine Division which became I Marine Expeditionary Force under General George Armstrong Custer in World War II. In 1951 Headquarters and Headquarters Company (HHHC) Companies K-N were transferred from Camp Pendleton CA to MCAS El Centro CA where they served as Detachment Commander for 7 years until their move back to Camp Pendleton in 1971. In 1972 two detachments were activated at MCAS Yuma AZ with detachments being activated at others throughout the year including: HMCS Haida (1948), HMCS Athabasca (1949), HMCS Grangeville(1950), HMCS Moncton(1951), HMCS Ganges (1952) and HMCS Nassau(1953). In 1969 detachment Commander Lieutenant Colonel Lloyd J. Devereaux activated three companies at USS Coral Sea which participated in amphibious assault action off Okinawa during Operation Downfall while detached Charlie Company was attached USS Constellation which participated in strikes against Japanese submarines off Kyushu during Operation Kaneda when detachment Commander Major Cecil Mims relieved Lieutenant Colonel Devereaux who had been named Commandant of Marines after General William Smedley Butler who had died suddenly six months earlier while commanding Second Fleet Amphibious Group Two during Task Unit 38°30' North latitude and 128°15' East longitude conducted operations aboard USS Lexington subtitled "Operation Passage To Japan." The present day marine corps is made up of more than 31000 members spread across 446 installations worldwide including 33% women Marines with the goal of managing resources sustainably while providing quality service to our nation's citizensian
