Troy, New York is a town in Chenango County, New York, United States. The population was 5,693 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Binghamton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Troy was Timothy Colt who arrived in 1786. In 1814, David Bache bought land from Nicholas Sassoon and built a cabin on what is now Elmira Road. By 1827, Bache had erected a frame courthouse and school house at the intersection of Center and Court Streets. The post office was established in 1828 with John Sperling as mailer. A sawmill was started by Levi Coffin on Main Street in 1830 and continued through 1840; it was destroyed by fire in 1842. The first store opened for business in Troy on Broadway between Centre and Court Streets in 1836. In 1845, fur trader Ebenezer Gay sold to Captain George Ransom an area including present-day Troy village that he had partly surveyed De Witt Clinton would later become known as Ransomville after him. During this time period many new towns were formed around Buffalo and Rochester because of the opening of the Erie Canal which connected those cities with Syracuse and other points eastward. In 1850,Ransomville became part of Troy when it merged with neighboring Village of Clinton to form one town under the name "Troy". Some residents within the then Village of Clinton refused to recognize their incorporation into Troy so they maintain their own government until 1860 when they all joined together forming the Town Board which still exists today as a governing body for Troy Township despite having dissolved more than 50 times over the years due to various incorporations/divisions etcetera changing hands etcetera . The original Courthouse which stands today (1860) burned down but was rebuilt using funds provided by Colonel Augustus Porterfield who purchased it from Timothy Colt prior to its destruction

Troy was a small town in upstate New York until the early 1800s. It became an important trading center for Regional Commerce and served as the site of many battles during the American Revolution. In 1814, Troy was renamed after Ulysses S. Grant, the first United States Secretary of War. The area around Troy has been occupied by humans and their animals since at least 12,000 years ago. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Troy were French Protestants who named it "St-Pierre" because they thought it might be a place where Jesus would come down from Heaven to preach. After arriving here, they built churches and homes and started exploring this part of upstate New York for possible land grants or trade opportunities with Native Americans living there. In 1625, Dutch traders discovered what is now Troy while on their way home from trading posts near Albany (now Syracuse). They named the area "Troy" which means "place where something precious is found." Over time, other groups moved into this area including English colonists in 1664 when Albany was surrendered by Spain to England; Scots Presbyterians in 1768 when Great Britain ceded control of present day New York; Germans in 1802 when Germany acquired Allegany County; Swedes in 1810 when Sweden gained control of present day Ontario County; and Italians in 1834 when Rome purchased Allegany County from Scotland following its victory over Napoleon’s forces at Waterloo. It wasn't until after General George Washington's Expedition against Canada that people began moving into what is now Troy specifically to exploit its natural resources such as coal and iron ore located hereabouts. The town's population had reached about 1,500 by 1800 but rapidly grew thanks to commercial activities conducted here like tanning hides, brewing beer and making cheese popular among local farmers. Many residents came from rural areas east of Buffalo where farming had continued even during times of economic hardship brought on by war or disease. 1) By 1860, most residents were Irish Catholics who worked on farms west of Buffalo while some switched to mining operations due to increased production values associated with yellow gold deposits nearby at Oswego Falls (near today's Niagara Falls). 2) The industry declined during the Civil War due primarily to competition from cheaper imports but continued growth following Reconstruction led by President Abraham Lincoln resulting in more than 4 million jobs created throughout America between 1865-1871 associated with various sectors including agriculture (increasingly based on horse power), manufacturing (products made out of gaslight rather than heavier materials), transportation (the development of canals), education (resulting in massive developments such as public schools and colleges), architecture (including large numbers being built around downtown Troy), finance (<$200 per capita income typical pre-Civil Rights era) – especially real estate development <2 blocks wide – leading eventually to widespread social problems such as overcrowding (>30% maximum occupancy for single family dwellings within 100 feet circumference only starting around 1920s!) 3) Rapid population growth resulted not just from exploitative practices but also high levels cf poverty (~40% national average before World Wars II!), crime (<1% nationally average pre-WWII), environmental degradation (<50ppm air pollution equivalent before 1970viz US EPA data*)4) These factors together contributed significantly (>75%)*to contemporarydestructive problems faced by Residents today
