Troy was first settled in 1795 by colonists from Connecticut. The town was named for General John Brown and his forces who fought against the British in 1814 during the American Civil War. In 1846, Troy became an incorporated village and it remained so until 1959 when it became a Town. The present-day Village of Troy began as a small farming community located on the east side of Chenango River just south of today's downtown area. On July 8, 1795, five men from Hartford founded what would become Troy after traveling downriver on their canoe trip from that city to assess land suitable for settlement. They were directed by General John Brown who had led an abortive attack on British forces near Albany three months earlier while leading Patriot militia against Royalist forces under Lieutenant Governor David Stonebridge. The new town site lay just upstream from where the river flowed into Seneca Lake and just north of modern day North Street which connected these two points along with current day South Street which forms its eastern border today. The first settler(s) arrived in what is now known as Old Troy on November 5th, 1795 by boat landing at what is now called Seneca Point (near modern day South Ferry). They were farmers and their families soon moved into their new homes which still stand today including some remaining structures dating back to this era such as Oneonta Roadhouse built about 1800 by Nicholas Andresen (N/A - This structure has been destroyed over time).
