Troy, New York is home to the world's first artisan coffee shop, The Hermitage Coffee House. Founded in 1846 by Nicholas-Jacques Conte, the shop became one of the most popular and well-known coffeehouses in New York City. In 1925, The Hermitage was purchased by Harry Sheppard and renamed The Harry Sheppard Coffee Shop. In 1967, The Harry Sheppard Coffee Shop was sold to a group of businessmen who changed its name to The Troy Coffee House. Today, the Troy Coffee House remains an important part of the town's community and culture. The history of artisan coffee begins with Nicholas-Jacques Conte. In 1846, Mr. Conte opened his first coffeehouse in New York City – The Hermitage Coffee House – which became one of the most popular and well-known spots for coffee lovers in the city. For over two decades, Mr. Conte operated this esteemed business alone; however, in 1925 he acquired a partner named Harry Sheppard who helped him expand his operations into what is now known as The Harry Sheppard Coffee Shop on Houston Street in Troy (now part of East Troy). This move marked a turning point for Mr. Conte's business as it allowed him to focus on providing high quality espresso drinks at reasonable prices to customers all over New York City! In 1967, when the Harry Sheppard Coffee Shop was sold to a group of businessmen from Troy (then called Webster), they decided that their new venture should become something more than just another small local coffeeshop; instead they wanted it to be associated with their hometown and help shape its future as an excellent cultural center for all interested people! So They renamed their shop "The Troy Coffee House" which stuck around until 1993 when it closed down due to financial troubles sustained by its previous owners duPont & Co.; however it reopened under new management later that year and currently operates as an excellent haven for cultural events within the town itself!
