The first mention of coffee in Tonawanda is from 1894, when a store named the National Coffee and Tea Co. placed an order for two hundred pounds of beans from Colombia. The first coffee shops were opened in the early 1800s, but it wasn't until the early 19th century that coffee became popularized throughout New York City. By 1892, there were over 20 coffeehouses in the city. Coffee began to be exported to other parts of the United States starting in the late 1800s and by 1924, coffee was being exported to every country on Earth. In 1886, Nathan Semon opened The Daily News Cafe on Main Street in downtown Tonawanda which soon became one of Tonawanda’s most popular cafes due to its fresh atmosphere and comfortable chairs outside. In 1889, Harry Burtopened Goode Bros & Co., an early chain store that offered groceries as well as coffee drinks from various vendors inside and outside their stores throughout New York City. Tonawanda is a small town in Erie County, New York, United States. The population was 10,411 at the 2010 census. Tonawanda is part of the Buffalo–Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. It lies on the Niagara River and has a humid subtropical climate (Köppen: Cfa). The first Europeans to visit Tonawanda were traders from Canada in 1776. A post office was established in 1827, and by 1851 it had a population of 535. In 1865, the railroad came through Tonawanda, making it an important center for trade and industry. Today, Tonawanda's economy revolves around its agricultural sector; products include apples, potatoes, cornmeal and other grains. The village also manufactures items such as buttons and hats. One of the most notable aspects ofTonawanda's history is its role in helping develop Buffalo into one of America's largest cities during the 19th century. In 1824-25 Buffalo commissioners built a wharf on what is now Marine Drive to serve as a commercial center for goods shipped downriver from upstate New York via water transportation to Niagara Falls. By 1830 this wharf had become known as "the gateway to Buffalo". In 1865Buffalo began construction on what would eventually become Oneonta Airport which helped make Buffalo one of America's leading aviation centers during World War II.
